Praying The Right Way

Er. Dadachanji highlights the following important guidelines to strengthen the power of our prayers, by praying in the right manner…

We should pray one Ashem Vohu in the morning when we wake-up and venerate the ground as Asfandarmad Ameshaspand takes care of the earth. This one Ashem Vohu is equivalent to praying it one lakh times, because our mind is peaceful when we are awaken from sleep and it is affected by Ashoi.

The Sarosh Yasht Hadokht instructs us that Ashem Vohu should be prayed when we wake-up in the morning, any time during the day in our waking hours, before meals, at night and during the demise of a person, in both ears. The 61st chapter of the Yajashne instructs us that if we regularly pray Ashem Vohu, Yatha Ahu Vairyo and Yenghe Hatam daily, then we can drive away all evil forms, and we can benefit. The 20th Section of the Ashishvangh Yasht tells us Prophet Zarathustra melted Satan like molten metal by praying Ashem Vohu. Such is the power of Ashem Vohu, Yatha Ahu Vairyo and Yenghe Hatam.

We should honour all the Ameshaspands by taking care of the various creations they are in charge of. The Parabh Jasans are performed as thanksgiving rituals for the gifts received from Ahura Mazda. Besides praying, the 4th Chapter of the Vendidad exhorts us to help those in need of money, knowledge or those who wish to be married.

Bahman Ameshaspand, who sits next to Ahura Mazda, takes care of our knowledge and intelligence. The Bahman Yasht assures us that if we take care of goats and cattle, we will never lack for grain or water. When a Nirang Din ritual is performed, the seven Ameshaspands gather, as all the creations are used in the ritual.

We should always wear the Sudreh Kusti as we pledged during our Navjote ritual. Prophet Zarathustra instructed us to always avoid evil thoughts, words and deeds and always to make good words, thoughts and deeds our way of life.

Prayer manifests effects when we pray wholeheartedly. Er. Dadachanji illustrated the power of sincere prayer by quoting the example of his neighbour, Jal Rabadi, who was in coma for three months due to head injuries in an accident. Er. Dadachanji prayed the Ardibehesht Yasht at his bedside at the request of the patient’s wife and when he finished praying the Nirang of Ardibehesht Yasht, the patient came out of the coma, sat up and still lives. Teshtar Tir Yazad gives us rain when we pray sincerely. Such a miracle had happened in drought-ridden Nagpur. When we prayed sincerely to Teshtar Tir Yazad, we were blessed with rain.
