Parsee Gymkhana Holds Arm Wrestling Tourney

Parsee Gymkhana (PG) conducted its second ‘All Zoroastrian Men and Women Arm Wrestling Competition’, registered and recorded under the Maharashtra Arm Wrestling Association Nagpur, at the gymkhana grounds in Mumbai on 18th November, 2017. Organized by Rustom Jasoomoney, Minoo Khan, Khodadad Yazdegardi and Vivek Chaphekar, and sponsored by Veldon Coats, Wibbs Bakery, Zoroastrian Cooperative Bank, Raymond Industries, Dunnes Institute, Minoo Khan and Xerxes Dastur, the tournament witnessed over fifty participants from Pune, Surat, Ahmedabad, Nagpur and Mumbai showcasing great sportsmanship. This year a ‘Champion of Champions’ category was introduced for both Men and Women, and had the champion of 2016 face this year’s champion to clinch the ultimate prize and trophy!

The ground rules of the tournament stated that every participant had to have their badge number with them, lifting, jumping of the elbow or pulling the opponents hand would be considered foul, a distance of thirty centimetres had to be maintained between the shoulder and grip, while the grip of the opponent would be within thirty seconds of contesting. Hosted by Hutoxi Doodhwala, the event was inaugurated by the oldest contestant, eighty year old Er. Yezdi Panthaki and presided over by Chief Guest and founder of Mentor Global, Dilnnawaz Damania. Speaking to Parsi Times, Dilnnawaz said, “It was fantastic to see the participation level among the Parsi community from all ages. Participants above sixty years of age took this event so seriously, which worked as motivation for the youngsters.” Every match turned into an exciting contest keeping all the spectators on the edge of their seats.

The finale witnessed Parsee Gymkhana President, Mehli Golvala felicitating Dilnnawaz, followed by the distribution of medals and certificates to all winners, while the ‘Champion of Champions’ category winners, men and women were awarded prize money of fifteen thousand and ten thousand, respectively, along with trophies. All in all, the event was extremely successful and was enjoyed by the community.
