Parsee Gym Runners Up In Comrade Shield 2018

PT Sports Reporter Binaisha M. Surti brings you glimpses of the Comrade Shield 2018 which took place from 11th – 13th May, 2018, at the DY Patil Stadium in Nerul.

The intense clash of the Young Comrade Shield Cricket Tournament 2018, held at the DY Patil Stadium in Nerul, Mumbai, from 11th to 13th May, 2018, witnessed the talented Team Parsee Gymkhana (PG) face DY Patil Sports Academy. PG boys showed good fighting spirit and came in ‘Runners Up’, with DY Patil clinching the Match by 3 wickets.

The tournament commenced by observing a moment’s silence in memory of Mac Spencer – reputed PG and Dena Bank cricketer who passed away last week. Winning the toss and electing to bat first, PG put up a mammoth 528 in 89.1 overs in their first innings, thanks to brilliant batting by Aakarshit Gomel (145), Bravish Shetty (141) and skipper Raunaq Sharma (122). For DY Patil, Shubham Ranjane picked 3-54 in 15 overs.

Chasing this score, DY Patil made 498-8 in 90 overs, courtesy a brilliant, unbeaten 246 from Shubham Ranjane and 118 from Shashank Singh. PG bowlers, Shivam Malhotra and Puneet Tripathi, picked two wickets each. Batting again in the second innings, PG scored 204 in 36.3 overs as Bravish top scored with 51. DY Patil chased down the winning target of 235 in their second innings, losing seven wickets in the process. Aakarshit Gomel and Puneet Tripathi took three wickets each.

Post the match, speaking to Parsi Times, Vice President and Cricket Secretary of PG, Khodadad Yazdegardi said, “We have won two championships earlier but ideally should have won the Comrade Shield too… we were so close yet so far. As a team, we will take back the positives from this loss. We will put in more effort and try winning important championships next season.”

Senior cricketer, Vinayak Mane, who has represented PG for six years stated, “We have a good bunch of cricketers – a mix of youth and experience who have worked hard through the whole season. Khodadad has been a pillar of support and is a big reason that the Club is doing well today. We would like more cricketers from PG to represent Mumbai and take cricket to the next level.”

Earlier this season, the talented Parsee Gymkhana team first won the ‘69th Salar Jung Invitation Cricket Tournament 2018’ as also the ‘RFS Talyarkhan Memorial Invitation Cricket Tournament 2018’.
