Hutatma Chowk: Hutatma Chowk, which was also known as Martyrs’ Square, is a square which hosts Flora Fountain in South Mumbai. It was officially renamed in the memory of the members of Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti, who lost their lives when police fired upon their peaceful demonstration for the creation of the State of Maharashtra. The Samiti achieved its goal on 1st May, 1960, when the State of Bombay was partitioned into the Marathi-speaking State of Maharashtra and the Gujarati-speaking State of Gujarat. A statue of a ‘Martyr with a Flame’ stands next to Flora Fountain. The square is lined on all sides by buildings constructed during the British Raj.

Dhobitalao: Dhobitalao is a neighbourhood in South Mumbai, which during the British raj, used to be a location where linen was washed. However, in the mid-17th century, it got inhabited as the city began to expand. The north-eastern part of Dhobitalao is called Cavel, from the Koli name ‘Kolwar’. A public library stands over the land and just off the current site, is the famous Metro Adlabs (formerly Metro Cinema). Premier academic institutions like St. Xavier’s College, St. Xavier’s High School, GT Hospital and ESIS Hospital are located here.
