Classical Dance Maestro Shirin Vazifdar Passes Away

Veteran in almost all classical dance forms, Shirin Vazifdar passed away on 29th September, 2017. Breaking all conventions back in the 1930s, she decided to train in Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Manipuri, Kathakali and Mohiniattam. She soon taught dance to her two sisters, Khurshid and Roshan, and together they started performing as the ‘Vajifdar Sisters’. A strict disciplinarian, Shirin has innumerable performances to her credit, the most notable one being from the film ‘Mayurpankha’, where Director Kishore Sahu invited Shirin to choreograph a dance sequence, in which Khurshid and Roshan danced for a duet sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle. With music composed by Shankar Jaikishan, the film won an award at the Cannes Film Festival.
