The leading eye specialist of the nation who has won global accolades and stands out as one of the tallest feathers in our Community’s cap, the dynamic Dr. Cyres Mehta, was awarded the ‘British Ophthalmic excellence award’ by the ‘Eye Research Society of the UK’, at the recently held annual conference of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, held in Vienna, Austria, just last week.

Dr. Cyres Mehta was felicitated with the prestigious award at the hands of the Chief Guest, the Indian Ambassador to Austria and Montenegro, Smt. Renu Pall, IFS. This would be the 15th time in 15 years that our community’s dashing Dr. Cyres has been invited to conduct his tremendously popular instruction courses on his 3 pet subjects – namely: the Complicated Cataract Surgery by Robotic Laser; the Advanced Glaucoma Surgery; and Laser Vision Correction by the new SMILE minimally invasive technique.

“Dr. Cyres is the pioneer in India for Robotic cataract surgery and Non Penetrating glaucoma surgery,” declared the introduction at the awards function. Said Smt. Renu Pall, Indian Ambassador, “I am so proud that Indian eye surgeons have achieved the highest of honors here!” Dr. Cyres’ felicitation met with a record turnout, with the hall overcrowding and the entrance having to be shut down as there was no standing room!

The congress had 9500 delegates from 31 countries, many of who were present when Dr. Cyres and his team provided video techniques of handling some of the toughest and complicated cases. It is a further matter of great pride for our Community to note that at the function, Dr. Cyres was unanimously elected as ‘Scientific Chairman’ of the International Society of Cataract Surgeons – the very first Indian to hold this
position.
