On 15th May, 2019, Mumbai-based Dr. Jehangir A Kohiyar, considered the pioneer of modern tattooing in India, passed away. Affectionately known as Jangoo, his passing is mourned by the Indian and global tattooing community. Professionally, Dr. Jehangir was a psychiatrist who learned the art of tattooing from Jock Liddell (aka Tattoo Jock) during his medical studies in England. He brought the art to India in the 1960s and was mentor to celebrated artists including New York-based legendary ink master, Anil Gupta and leading Mumbai-based artist, Sameer Patange. He is also said to have taught the art to the famous Switzerland-based Leu family (including Filip Leu) in the 1970s.
