On August 24th, 2019, ZACLA (Zoroastrian Association of California, Los Angeles) members organized and reveled in the fun and rare opportunity to enjoy a ‘Lagan nu Patru’ in California, USA – a gala celebration in thirty years – all thanks to the ‘Jamva Chaloji’ event. Attended by 190 happy and satiated people who enjoyed traditional Parsi meal, the event was made more wonderful by the fact that it was procured, prepared and served by our own community members – a labor of love!
Eyes smiled with delight and mouths watered as the feast was brought out from a kitchen ably managed by Zerksis Bhandara and Katy Alamshaw. The Patru had it all! Starting with the delicious Gajar-Meva Achaar (Hootoxi Minocherhomjee); Saria (Zarrir and Zerkxis Bhandara); Patra ni Macchi (Navaz and Zubin Taraporwala; Sali Boti (Zubin Kolah); Mutton Pulao–Masala Dal; Lagan nu Custard (Katy and Dhun Alamshaw and Meher Dastur); homemade Mango Kulfi (Xerxes and Diana Commissariat) – all rounded out a much appreciated Parsi feast! The kids’ menu was prepared by Reshma and Adil Rustomjee. Volunteers made the food service seamless thanks to Homi Bodhanwala, Xerxes Commissariat, Hilla Macchi, Houtoxi and Farhad Contractor and Roxanne Unwalla, Farzin Morena and Cyrus Cama kept all in good spirits as the barkeeps in the house!
In addition to the food, nostalgia was further stoked by Nauzad and DJ Zubin who began the evening entertaining all with Bollywood tunes from the ‘60s and ‘70s and then rocked the house for the youngsters late into the night! Kudos to the center for putting in great thought and effort to deliver a fab evening for the LA Zarthostis – a grand New Year gift of ‘home away from home’ to the Community indeed!
