It is wonderful to discover that one of our very own Dasturjis was a highly evolved soul, who not only was revered by Parsis, but also respected greatly by other communities… even as of today. It is none other than Dasturji Azar Kaiwan Bin Azar Gushasp! The name Azar Kaiwan means cold fire or the fire from the astral plane of Saturn. It is basically symbolic of one who has attained the highest stage of spiritual fire and is yet very humble.

Though no comprehensive historic records exist to substantiate the existence of Dasturji Azar Kaiwan, one story emerges time and again. It is said that at the time of leaving his earthly body, Dasturji Azar Kaiwan requested time in seclusion. He told his faithful flock to come back after the four days of his isolation. When they opened the door to the Dargah, they discovered four different coloured flowers in the place where Dasturji was last seen in his physical form. He passed onto the higher plane on Farvardin Roj and Avan Mahino, at Azizabad near Patna, where there is a shrine dedicated to him even today.  There is no known photograph or picture of this saint, but his ability to heal through his manthric power is legendary.

Our manthric legacy, be it the five Gathas of Asho Zarathushtra Spitaman or the twenty-one Nasks of Pak Dadar Ahura Mazda, is the source from whence come these invaluable gems – our Nirangs. We are blessed to have these to tide us through difficult periods of ill-health or any other inconveniences or trouble.

It is this legacy that he passed on through Dasturjii Kukadaru Saheb – Himself renowned for his ability to cure all ills. Dasturji Azar Kaiwan was Dasturji Kukadaru Saheb’s spiritual teacher, he gave to Kukadaru Saheb the following Nirang:

‘Namaj-va-darud-vasetayesh-va-afreen Barvaje-e-Kaiwan-safrehar Fe-naam Ravan-e-la-Teemar-Teen-e-u Arman-Saz-Harde Namane-Hom’.

Dasturji Kukadaru Saheb said, “I, by the name and line with Dastur Azar Kaiwan, by his mastery and skill, cure ills/diseases by giving these Nirangs to people.”
