According to the WHO, the COVID-19 pandemic has greatly disrupted critical mental health services in 93% countries, globally. Bereavement, isolation, loss of income and fear, have triggered mental health conditions or exacerbated existing ones. Many people have faced increased levels of alcohol and drug use, insomnia and anxiety. Meanwhile, COVID-19 itself led to neurological and mental complications, such as delirium, agitation and stroke. Dr. Mukesh Batra explains how you can help your loved ones combat mental health issues with homeopathy…

How can homeopathy help deal with mental health?

A clinic trial conducted showed that 58% people with stress and anxiety, benefited from homeopathic treatment. Homeopathy, being holistic, is considered a mind and body medical science. The initial stages of the pandemic recorded a 20% increase in cases of depression and anxiety stemming from fear (Indian Psychiatric Society).

In homeopathy, the following remedies are recommended to deal with the following common mental health complaints relevant to this period:

The following are a few Coping Tips:

Minimizing News Consumption: It’s good to stay informed about the on-going status of the Coronavirus. Don’t fall for fake news being circulated on social media. Go through authenticated news sources once or twice a day.

Create Routine Patterns: Getting comfortable with a routine will help you manage your anxiety better.

Stay Connected: A certain sense of connection is important for your physical and mental well-being. Use virtual mediums to stay in touch with your loved ones.

Pay Heed To Your Needs: Eat healthy, engage in physical activities to stimulate your health and stay in touch with your loved ones.

Be Empathetic To The Affected And Yourself:  If you know someone in your vicinity that has tested positive for COVID-19, don’t shun them. Be compassionate towards them. Similarly, don’t give yourself a hard time if you are out of a job or even if you have been infected. Reach out to people and let them help you.

Our elders (especially active persons) might find this period extra difficult to deal with. Their movements are restricted and they are confined to the home. When dealing with elders, the most important thing is to engage and not ignore. Don’t lose your patience. The following tips help deal with your elderly loved ones better:

  • Set them tasks around the home, which will occupy both – their time and their minds.
  • Set up family Game hour, where even though they might not be able to interact with their friends, they will find a connection with family members.
  • Ask them about their lives… very often we don’t really know their stories, when they reminisce, it takes them back, triggering memories as well as creating a bond between you and them.
