Respected as an outstanding officer with exemplary courage, dedication, devotion, cultivated professional competence and integrity of highest order, ACP Kayomerz Irani received this recognition honouring his valiant and unblemished record of service. The President’s Police Medal is a decoration awarded annually to select law enforcement officers of India for gallantry and distinguished services.

The Mumbai-based top cop started his career in the Police Force in 1993 and has dedicated to the nation and its citizens, innumerable acts of heroic service. Speaking to Parsi Times, ACP Kayomerz Irani said, “It’s a great honour to receive this award. The President’s Police Medal is a recognition of our services and an inspiration to continue serving the nation and work harder in the future. To be in a profession dedicated to the service of the nation and its citizens is a privilege. Whether in times of peace or distress, festivities or calamities, the Indian Police Service is selflessly dedicated to protecting the people of the country. Life in the force can be difficult and challenging, and the call of duty takes precedence over everything else, but it is a truly fulfilling vocation. I cherish being a part of the force.”

ACP Kayomerz served at the Sir J J Marg Police Station, which was newly created after the communal riots. While on duty at Bhendi Bazar (Mumbai) in 1996, he apprehended 2 dreaded gangsters of the Chota Rajan gang – Ejaz Lakdawala and Parkar while they were fleeing, after murdering a Dawood gang member. Showing superhuman bravery, he arrested them without fearing for his life, even as they fired at him. But he disarmed and arrested them, recovering two foreign-made pistols and live rounds. He was awarded by the Mumbai Police Commissioner with a reward of Rs. 10,000/- and a note lauding his bravery.

In 1999, when ACP Kayomerz was selected to work with the Intelligence Bureau (Home Ministry, GoI), he was instrumental in detecting numerous cases of forged travel documents and visas. In charge of Foreigners Registration Branch in Mumbai, he detected illegal immigrants in India and played a crucial role in launching the PIO (Person of Indian Origin) and OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) Scheme for the GoI.

ACP Kayomerz played a crucial role during Mumbai’s most deadly 26/11 terror attacks, providing safe passage for distressed foreigners to their home countries by issuing them exit permits in coordination with their consulates, as well as provided vital information regarding foreign casualties to their consulates. His work was highly appreciated by foreign missions and Mumbai’s Police Commissioner sanctioned him two advanced increments and conferred him with ‘C’ Note by Jt. Director, Intelligence Bureau.

In addition to these extraordinarily courageous achievements, ACP Kayomerz also launched GoI’s IVFRT (Immigration Visa Foreigners Registration Tracking) as also Phases 1, 2 and 3 of GoI’s eFRO modules – a project of liberalized visa policy for foreigners  for Maharashtra State, Goa, MP and Chhattisgarh.

“I have on numerous occasions stated that our youngsters should join the forces – not only the Police, but we should have our representation on higher posts in various government departments, like Revenue, Railways, Customs, etc. A career in the civil and allied services offers a deep understanding of Indian society and an opportunity to take concrete steps towards its betterment. The impact of such actions can transform generations – not every career choice allows one to do that,” concluded ACP Kayomerz.

Serving the nation is a proud family tradition for the Iranis, as their late father, Boman Behram Irani, worked at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center; mother, Piroja retired as Office Superintendent from the State Excise Department and brother ACP Cyrus Irani, is also a much-celebrated officer in the IPS.
