Alexandra School Celebrates 160 Years

Established in the year 1863, the Alexandra Girls’ English Institution celebrated its milestone 160th year with much pomp and pride, on 3rd September, 2024, at Mumbai’s Sophia Bhabha auditorium, packed with students, staff, alumni and well-wishers, who were treated to enthralling performances put up by over 370 students and ex-students.

The acts reflected a mix of tradition and modernity comprising dance performances, a fashion show, UV act, a gymnastics-cum-aerial act, with the principal and staff performing the show-stopping ‘Retro to Metro’ themed dance performance which garnered much applause. The show culminated with the Final Bow after the Carnival Act.  Another highlight was the unveiling of its souvenir – Footprints, by the Board of Directors and Trustees. Through the year, the school has been organising events to commemorate this milestone, including a cultural fiesta, an inter-school fest, donation drives and events bringing together staff, students and alumni.

The Alexandra Girls’ English Institution, which boasts of a proud and remarkable record of having so far provided exceptional all-round education to over 10,000 Indian girls and women, has been furthering its notable legacy of academic excellence, under the dynamic leadership of Principal – Kashmira Sarkari, alongside Vice Principal of Curricular & Co- Curricular Activities – Jenefer Chesan and Administrator – Rohintan Elavia; with much credit to its supportive and caring staff of teachers and other personnel.

The school was built by the great visionary and advocate of women’s empowerment – Manockjee Cursetjee, whose mission was to ensure education to women at a time when the concept was not socially acceptable. Named after Princess Alexandra, Princess of Wales, the school started out with just 13 young girls, who went on to make a mark as empowered women in society. In fact, the great freedom fighter, Madam Cama, was one of the illustrious alumni of this institution.
