Parsee Gym Holds Exciting 10th All-Parsee TT Tourney

The tenth edition of Parsee Gymkhana’s (PG) highly anticipated All-Parsee Table Tennis Tournament proved to be a smashing success, drawing in 90 participants competing across six categories over three thrilling days, from 18th to 20th April, 2025.

The action-packed tourney commenced with the Under-14 category with 15 entries and the Open Singles Qualifying rounds, with 64 players, battling it out to fight the top 16 in the main draw. While the talented Yashan Kolah won the Under-14 title, Zubin Taraporewalla maintained his stranglehold in the Open singles, alongside his better half, Frenaz, retaining the Open doubles. Captain Colony pipped holders Parsee Gymkhana by a narrow margin in the Team events. Old warhorse Sarosh Shroff did well to retain his Veteran singles’ title. The maximum excitement, though, was reserved for the much-anticipated Jumbled teams event where doubles’ partners and teammates turned opponents! Zubin’s team narrowly triumphed over his Thane compatriot Percy Patel’s team.

While Godrej Baug, Khareghat Colony and Rustom Baug were represented in big numbers, players came from across India, with Col. Firdosh Dubash, currently posted in Kerala, also participating in the tournament, and lauding the tournament and the ambience! Eight times national Motocross champion, Rustom Patel, remarked during the Prize Distribution, ”It’s heartening to see Parsis of various ages playing TT, especially youngsters who are otherwise hooked on to their cell-phones!”

PG, as always, pulled out all stops to encourage community members, ensuring the tourney was a resounding success – providing free T-shirts to players, providing meals on all days, hiring brand new tables, awarding attractive cash prizes, trophies and medals to winners… and to inspire and motivate the youth, the Under-14 event was kept free, as has been done through the years.

Chief Guest, Kaity Khodaiji, National champion in women’s singles for 3 consecutive years (1969 to 1971) and 6-times mixed doubles National title holder, observed the vast changes in the standard of the game and was delighted to see a good number of Parsis play at a competitive level. Gratitude was expressed to generous sponsors – Dinshaw Tamboly of WZO Trust Funds and Justice Sharukh Kathawalla (Retd), for their unwavering support which played a pivotal role in making the tournament a grand success.
