ZAC Undertakes Sacred Cruise

The Zoroastrian Association of California embarked on a unique observance of ancient traditions on 6th April, 2025 (Mah Ava, Roj Ashishvang), setting sail for an hour-long cruise aboard the boat ‘Something Special’, chartered from Long Beach, instead of a traditional land-based pilgrimage. This special undertaking commenced with two dozen devoted Zarthostis uniting in prayer, led by Ervad Zarrir Bhandara, praying the Avan Ardavishur Nyaish resonated across the waters, with hearts attuned to the benevolent energies of Avan, Ashishvang and Perendi Yazads. In a gesture of reverence, they showered the Pacific waves with fragrant rose petals from their gardens, followed by offerings of rice, milk and sugar.

Speaking with Parsi Times, Er. Zarrir sahred, “Praying the sacred Yatha Ahu Vairyo aboard the boat evoked a powerful connection to our ancestral journey. It recalled the historical voyage when our forefathers braving the seas to reach India, reciting this very prayer to calm a furious storm – a tradition still honored by the Kolis, who invoke ‘Parsi Taro Thabaryo’ with unwavering faith, often receiving miraculous aid amidst turbulent waters.” The unique pilgrimage culminated at the official premise of Captain Khushroo and wife, Rooky (ZAC President), with a delightful spread of vegetarian snacks, contributed by all, with fragrant chai by Ruzbeh Daruwalla.

ZAC is renowned for its heartfelt efforts in fostering unity within the close-knit Californian Zarthosti community by organizing a range of meaningful and engaging events. One such initiative held recently to encourage youth participation in the governance of ZAC, and nurturing them as the future torchbearers of the community, included honouring three outstanding youth members – Zara Xerxes Commissariat, Kyra Ashish Pithawalla, and Daisy Mehernosh Pithawalla – by awarding them the prestigious ‘ZAC Youth of the Year Award’, during the Navroze celebrations on 22nd March, 2025, which was attended by 240 ZAC members.

Zara and Daisy’s bond with ZAC began before birth, while newcomer Kyra has quickly won hearts with their collective unwavering dedication, embodying community spirit. The award ceremony, which was conducted by past Youth Award recipients, Er. Zerkxis Bhandara and Zane Commissariat, is the vision of the Gundevia, Fitter and Pithawalla families.
