Karachi-based journalist, Anushe Engineer made history by becoming the first Pakistani to win the top prize in the Young Reporters Writing category, at the prestigious AIPS Sport Media Awards 2024, held on 13th May, 2025, in Rabat, Morocco, during the 87th AIPS Congress. The award, which includes an AIPS scholarship at a major international sporting event, was presented by jury members Andreas Schirmer and Vincent Amalvy of Agence France-Presse.
The awards, presented by the International Sport Press Association (AIPS), celebrate the world’s finest sports journalism. Anushe Engineer, representing Dawn.com, won for her compelling feature, ‘It’s All Or Nothing For Arshad Nadeem In Paris’, chosen from three finalists out of 37 shortlisted global entries. Her piece chronicled the struggles and triumphs of Pakistan’s star javelin thrower, Arshad Nadeem, who stunned the world at the 2024 Paris Olympics by claiming gold with a record-breaking 92.97-metre throw, becoming Pakistan’s first Olympic medal in over three decades and its only non-hockey gold to date.
“I really had no idea what I was getting into when I started this piece, I just followed the story,” said Anushe, overwhelmed at the ceremony. Known for her work across human rights, politics and sports, Anushe’s achievement marks a proud moment for Pakistan’s Parsi community, resonating beyond the world of athletics.
