Dr. Cyres Mehta, the nation’s leading Ophthalmologist, reckoned globally for his genius and breakthroughs in the field of professional eye-care, was recently awarded the ‘Leading Eye Surgeon of Maharashtra’ for the third consecutive year, by Smt. Anupriya Patel, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, on 15th June, 2025. The prestigious award was presented to Dr. Cyres for his pioneering excellence in ophthalmology and for setting new benchmarks in eye care, nationally and globally.

Hailed as the ‘International Hero Of Indian Ophthalmology’, Dr. Cyres Mehta is the Founder and Chief Surgeon of ‘Dr. Cyres Mehta’s International Eye Centre’, located in Colaba, Mumbai, which is equipped with the world’s leading, state-of-the-art eye equipment, and has been providing world class services and procedures to patients from across 20 countries, including Robotic Laser Cataract Surgery, Trifocal and Extended Depth of Focus Lens Implantation, Canaloplasty Glaucoma Surgery, and SMILE Robotic Refractive Surgery for number correction, etc.

Dr. Cyres Mehta is currently focused on the latest breakthrough in Laser Cataract Surgery with the new Spiral and Extended Focus lenses, which ensures the patient is spectacle-free and which boasts of zero side effects, like night-time glare. Speaking to Parsi Times, Dr. Cyres Mehta explains, “When Trifocal lenses entered the market about a decade ago, it was a game changer for eye surgeons and patients. For the first time we had a lens technology, whereby people could see far and near without spectacles as well as intermediate distance, where we hold our iPads or devices or look at the computer screen. However, it had only one drawback – that of a little glare and halos at night. But thanks to technology advancing at such a rapid pace, scientists have now developed a new lens called a ‘Spiral Trifocal’, which has negligible to no glare at night. This lens has been developed combining the advantages of a Trifocal with a Mono-focal lens, which has no glare all. It’s been studied across three continents and thousands of satisfied patients.”

On being asked about the new Laser Cataract Surgery system, he answers, “The difference between the new laser cataract surgery we do and the old FAICO emulsification is that, however skilled a surgeon may be, he cannot match the micron efficiency of a laser system. The opening in the Cataract that we use to centre the lens, finally is much more precise with the laser system. This is even more important when we are centring a Trifocal lens in the eye. Imagine your progressive glasses, if they are tilted or don’t sit in the intended position, the vision will never be very good – similarly Trifocal lenses have to perfectly centred. Also, with the new laser system, we don’t have to use ultrasound energy in the eye, unlike the old phaco emulsification. This is very good, especially for older people with weak eyes as it greatly, shortens recovery time.”
