It is with deep reverence and a profound sense of loss that the Parsi community bids farewell to one of its most distinguished stalwarts – Er. Nadir Ardeshir Modi, who passed away peacefully on the afternoon of 5th June, 2025, at the age of 95. His funeral was held the next morning at Mumbai’s sacred Doongerwadi.
A brilliant legal mind and a devout Zoroastrian and priest, Er. Nadir Modi was a beacon of intellect, integrity and humility. Having completed his Navar and Martab ordainments from Navsari, he served as a highly respected Advocate of the Supreme Court of India, renowned for his expertise in both Civil and Criminal law. His sharp acumen, coupled with an unwavering sense of justice, earned him the admiration of peers and the gratitude of countless clients.
Equally gifted in academia, he also served as a Professor of English Literature, Mercantile Law, and Post-Graduate Law – imparting wisdom with clarity and grace. A prolific author, his numerous legal and literary works have enriched both the legal and cultural landscapes of India. Er. Modi’s humility, integrity, and compassion made him a revered figure far beyond courtrooms and classrooms. His charitable work and generous spirit touched countless lives. His contributions to the Zoroastrian community were profound.
As Chairman of the Athornan Mandal, he played a pivotal role in guiding and strengthening one of the most important institutions of our Parsi priesthood – the Dadar Madressa, nurturing its future generations of mobeds. His deep commitment to faith, tradition and community service earned him admiration and respect from all quarters. As Chairman of various Agiary Trust Funds and the Zartoshty Brothers (Canada) Fund Committee, he promoted the understanding and spread of Zoroastrian religion and culture.
Wise, gracious, and deeply compassionate, Er. Modi’s life was a shining example of purpose and service – to the law, to knowledge and to the Zoroastrian faith. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire for generations. An exemplary husband to the late Homai Modi, he is survived by his son, Peshotan Modi and daughter, Nawaz Modi Singhania, and family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones. May his noble soul find eternal peace in Garothman Behest.
