Established in 1672, Mumbai’s historic Doongerwadi or Tower of Silence, located at Malabar Hill, has been honoured with a heritage plaque under the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s Mumbai Legacy Project. The pilot scheme commemorates the city’s cultural landmarks by installing informative markers at significant sites across Mumbai. The metal plaque stands near Doongerwadi’s main entrance at the Kemps Corner junction, featuring a QR code that directs visitors to verified historical information.
Originally located three kilometres outside 17th‑century Mumbai’s fortifications, the site has watched the city transform from colonial outpost to vibrant metropolis, while continuing to preserve Parsi cultural heritage.
The pilot relies on carefully curated data for each QR code and will expand if successful. Instant access to heritage details has been welcomed as the initiative blends digital interactivity with commemoration to deepen public engagement with Mumbai’s past. The BMC also plans to replicate the QR‑coded plaque model citywide – mirroring successful heritage initiatives in London, and extending it to the Bhikha Behram Well, Godrej Baug and other historic locales.
