Honouring A Healing Legacy: Masina Hospital Crowned ‘Best Hospital For 120+ Years Of Healthcare Excellence’

Lauded for its longstanding commitment to patient-centred care, Masina Hospital was recently felicitated with the coveted ‘Best Hospital for 120+ Years of Healthcare Excellence’ award, by the Midday Health & Wellness Icons 2025, held in Mumbai. An accolade reserved for institutions that blend innovation with unwavering humanity, the award was accepted by Trustees Dr. Gustad Daver and Mr. Khushrow Major, on behalf of the hospital. Doubling the honours, the IGHM (Integrated Global Healthcare Mission) Custodian of Humanity Awards 2025 (Medgate Publications) also named Masina Hospital the Best Hospital in the Western Region of India, underscoring its role as a as a regional leader in compassionate, community-driven healthcare.

Equipped with modular OTs, a 128-slice GE CT scanner, advanced ICUs, and dialysis centres, and guided by devoted specialists, Masina seamlessly blends cutting-edge care with a charitable ethos. Says Dr. Gustad Daver, Trustee and Surgeon, “Masina’s true distinction lies not in its pioneering technologies or stately campus but in an unwavering commitment to its community. Generous support from eminent benefactors, including community stalwarts like like Mr. Shapoor P. Mistry, has modernized its infrastructure while preserving its founding spirit.”

Established in 1902 at the former Sans Souci Palace (David Sassoon’s former residence), Masina Hospital traces its roots to Dr. Hormusji Manekji Masina, the third Indian Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (1898). Bolstered by Bombay’s Parsi community, the Masina Hospital Trust emerged in 1907, cementing a mission of inclusive care for the underserved.

Masina pioneered India’s first hospital X-ray unit (1924), performed open-heart surgery (1949), and launched one of Mumbai’s inaugural neonatal and paediatric ICUs (1969). Its grounds hosted the 1889 Indian National Congress and welcomed the Prince of Wales in 1875. Through the Spanish Flu (1918) and COVID-19 (2020), the stairwell still bears Sassoon’s Coat of Arms – a testament to enduring legacy.

“Masina Hospital’s progress is propelled by its commitment to service and community,” shares CEO, Mr. Khushrow Major, highlighting that balancing infrastructure modernization with the hospital’s inclusive, charitable ethos is no small feat, but it is this challenge that sets Masina apart.

Managing Trustee Mr. Homi Katgara emphasizes the vital role of donor support in this transformation, “Each gift is stewarded with rigorous accountability to enhance patient care, reflecting Masina’s pillars of trust, tradition and outcomes. This fusion of values, philanthropy, and cutting-edge medical services secures Masina’s place as a cornerstone of Mumbai’s healthcare.”

Looking ahead, Masina honors the vision of Dr. H.M. Masina, the drive of leaders like Dr. Mehru Masina, and the spirit of every benefactor, doctor and patient who has shaped its glorious legacy.
