“Teaching is a very noble profession that shapes the character, calibre and future of an individual, and consequently society and the nation,” wrote late Abdul Kalam, India’s cherished and beloved President. As we observe Teacher’s Day on 5th September, these words ring especially true for our community, which has always placed education and its torchbearers at the very heart of its identity. Despite being a minuscule community, our contributions as educators, mentors and thought leaders have been vast, shaping India’s intellectual, social and cultural landscape.
But we are perhaps blessed most to have our greatest teacher in our very faith! Zoroastrianism has, for millennia, instilled in us the simple yet profound principles of Good Thoughts, Good Words and Good Deeds. We are taught to respect nature and to live in harmony with all of God’s creations, while contributing meaningfully to the world. This sacred inheritance has primed us to succeed in life, not merely through our achievements, but through the timeless wisdom of living with purpose.
Even before a child steps into a classroom, the first and most influential teachers are the parents. An infant absorbs the world by watching the everyday actions of its primary caretakers. This unspoken education, repeated in countless moments, becomes the true foundation of character. It serves as a powerful reminder that as parents and elders, we are constantly shaping the next generation; and our conduct becomes the living textbook from which children imbibe their earliest values.
Families that have an educator in their midst are truly privileged – a truth I personally resonate with. To live alongside one who dedicates life to shaping minds is to be constantly surrounded by learning and inspiration. Such families witness firsthand the dignity and lasting impact of an educator whose work uplifts not only students, but also communities and the nation at large.
On this Teacher’s Day, let us celebrate and salute all those who dedicate their lives to nurturing minds and shaping futures. From our parents and caretakers to our teachers, from the timeless guidance of our faith to the mentors and icons who inspire us in life… each plays an integral role in moulding generations by imparting wisdom that builds not only careers, but also character, conscience and compassion.
