Let Distance Not Turn To Disconnect

Dear Readers,

We often laugh at the old community joke: “Everyone is related to everyone!” It reminds us of our famously close-knit families and cousin-marriages that filled earlier generations. But even as we chuckle at being so interlinked, it seems we are steadily drifting apart. Families lose touch, relatives meet only at weddings or funerals, and our youth risk losing the deeper sense of belonging, crucial to a micro community as ours.

This distance is visible between our youth in Mumbai and those in smaller towns like Pune, Navsari and Surat, as well as cities like Kolkata, Bangalore and Delhi. We tend to remain anchored in our own geographical circle. We need a stronger bridge linking our youth not only across India, but with their counterparts abroad.

Worldwide, our community is excelling in global professions, raising families and carrying our heritage with pride. Imagine the friendships, opportunities and collaborations that could bloom if our youth here were more connected with them – through exchanges, internships or platforms created for Parsis worldwide. Associations like WZCC, XYZ and others do commendable work, but most initiatives remain local.

What is needed is a mindset shift. Staying connected is our responsibility – to each other and to our collective future. Let distance not turn to disconnect. Every new friendship, every bond rekindled, every young Parsi who finds another across the nation and the globe adds to our strength. By reaching out, sharing and staying present in each other’s lives, we do more than preserve our legacy, we keep the community spirit shining brighter for generations to come.

Have a lovely weekend!
