Dr. Sorooshian Makes History-Awarded AGU’s Top Honour

The global Zoroastrian and Iranian diaspora celebrates a proud milestone as acclaimed Iranian-American hydrologist, 76-year-old Dr.SorooshSorooshian, has been awarded the William Bowie Medal, the highest honour of the American Geophysical Union (AGU).Dr.Sorooshian was honoured for his “exceptional contributions to water science and practice” and his pioneering work in developing a global precipitation product that serves millions worldwide.Established over 85 years ago, the Bowie Medal is AGU’s most prestigious recognition, presented to scientists who have made transformative contributions to geophysics while advancing collaboration and mentorship in science.

A distinguished Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Irvine, and Director of the Center for Hydrometeorology and Remote Sensing, Dr.Sorooshian’s career spanning over five decades, has witnessed him shape the course of modern hydrology. He has trained generations of scientists and created groundbreaking tools that help communities worldwide manage water – humanity’s most vital resource.This achievement serves as a testament to Dr.Sorooshian’s decades of scientific excellence and mentorship.

Born in Kerman, Iran, Dr.Sorooshian moved to the United States in 1966 and earned his PhD from UCLA. His illustrious career includes prestigious honours such as the Robert E. Horton Medal, NASA’s Distinguished Public Service Medal, and the UNESCO Great Man-Made River Water Prize. A member of the US National Academy of Engineering and several international scientific academies, he became the first Iranian scientist to receive the Bowie Medal, marking a historic moment.

The award, which will be presented at AGU’s Annual Meeting this December, celebrates this landmark achievement while honouring the enduring Zoroastrian and Iranian legacy of knowledge, service and mentorship. Dr.Sorooshian’s remarkable journey, from Kerman to California, embodies the resilience, brilliance and far-reaching impact of the Zoroastrian community on the global stage.
