Let’s Talk, Let’s Listen, Let’s Heal

Dear Readers,

Every family has a story. Some are told with laughter over cups of choi and bhakra, others are whispered behind closed doors. But there are some stories that remain untold… accounts of sleepless nights spent staring into the dark, of inexplicable sadness and tears wiped away before anyone notices, of meals left untouched and conversations avoided, of smiles forced to hide a heaviness that words can’t describe… stories of once-vibrant individuals who quietly fade into silence.

As we mark World Mental Health Day on 10th October, it’s time to bring those stories to light. Across the world, mental health challenges are rising, and our Parsi community is no exception. While biological factors like genetics, hormonal changes, age-related neurological shifts do play their part, the emotional landscape of our community often deepens the struggle. We are rapidly shrinking in numbers and with the major part of our population above the age of 60, loneliness has become a silent epidemic. Many of our elders live alone, grappling with grief, isolation or the fear of being forgotten. Others silently bear the weight of anxiety and depression, believing it’s “just a part of growing old.”

And it’s not only the elderly who struggle. Young adults too face immense pressure – from the relentless weight of academic expectations to the anxiety of uncertain careers and financial insecurity – often without the emotional vocabulary to express their struggles Reaching out for help has never been more important, yet far too many still see it as a sign of weakness. It isn’t. Asking for help is an act of strength. It’s one of the bravest decisions we make towards healing.

Mental illness is not a moral failing, it’s a human condition. And just as we rally around those facing physical illness, we must extend the same compassion and urgency to those struggling with mental health. Let us make the effort to reach out to a lonely neighbour, listen without judgment to a friend in distress and encourage seeking professional support where it’s needed. In doing so, we help build a community where no one feels they have to suffer in silence.

Let’s talk. Let’s listen. And most importantly, let’s heal together.

Have a lovely weekend!
