The ancient Iranian festival of Mehregan was celebrated with pride in Iran, as officials and tourism professionals gathered at Persepolis on 19th October, 2025 to unveil a plaque marking its inclusion on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The event, held at the Persepolis World Heritage Site in Fars province, drew nearly 200 tourism guides and representatives from government and private sectors.
Farideh Asadi, Head – Professional Association of Tourism Guides, Fars, described the occasion as a proud moment that highlights the cultural role of tour guides in preserving and promoting Iran’s heritage. She emphasized that Mehregan represents unity among Iran’s diverse ethnic groups and the continuity of ancient traditions.
Mehregan, celebrated mainly by Zoroastrians and in rural Muslim traditions, features rituals like sacred recitations, festive table settings and special delicacies. Music, wrestling and communal feasts further enrich the festivities. Though less common in cities, it remains significant in northern Iran and among Zoroastrian communities in Yazd, Fars and Tehran.
Recognized by UNESCO in December 2024 as a joint submission by Iran and Tajikistan, Mehregan (or the Festival of Mehr) celebrates friendship, peace and the autumn harvest. Rooted in Zoroastrian belief, it remains an enduring symbol of gratitude and togetherness, celebrated through rituals, prayers and communal feasts.
