Freddie Mercury, the unforgettable voice of iconic rock band ‘Queen’ and one of the most electrifying performers in music history, has been immortalised once again. The Royal Mint (UK’s official sovereign mint responsible for producing all circulating currency) in Llantrisant, has released a striking new collectable coin celebrating his legacy, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of his extraordinary ‘Live Aid’ performance and his first solo studio album, ‘Mr. Bad Guy’. The coin joins the Mint’s distinguished Music Legends series, which honours Britain’s most influential musicians.
The design captures Mercury mid-performance, complete with his signature etched across the surface. A musical stave circling the coin symbolises his famous four-octave vocal range, while a silver-studded band around the edge pays tribute to the belt worn during Live Aid in 1985. The first coin was struck by Mercury’s sister, Kashmira Bulsara, who described the moment as deeply emotional, sharing that Freddie would have been thrilled to receive such recognition, calling the design a perfect reflection of his passion and joy.
In keeping with his philanthropic spirit, a special gold proof coin will be donated to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, the AIDS charity founded in his memory. The trust will auction the piece to continue Mercury’s mission of supporting those affected by HIV and AIDS.
The coin also celebrates the 40th anniversary of Queen’s era-defining Live Aid set. Although the band had not originally been scheduled to perform, their 21-minute appearance became the highlight of the event. With Mercury’s flawless vocals, commanding stage presence and the now-iconic “Aaaaaay-o” call-and-response with 72,000 fans, the performance was hailed as one of the best ever. The new Music Legends coin range is available at The Royal Mint, allowing fans around the world to own a piece of Freddie Mercury’s timeless magic.
Born Farrokh Bulsara in 1946, Mercury spent his early years in Zanzibar and India before moving to England in 1964. In 1970, he formed ‘Queen’ with Brian May and Roger Taylor. Together, they created some of the most iconic songs in rock history, including Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are the Champions, Radio Gaga and We Will Rock You. Mercury’s theatricality, charisma and peerless voice elevated Queen to global fame. His solo work further showcased his versatility as an artist. He passed away in 1991 at the age of 45 but remains one of rock music’s greatest legends.
