In a landmark moment for Indian medical excellence, globally acclaimed ophthalmic surgeon, Dr. Cyres Mehta has been honoured with the revered Benedetto Strampelli Medal Lecture, by the 150-year-old Società Oftalmologica Italiana (SOI), on 29th November, 2025, in Rome. He becomes the first Indian in twenty-five years to receive this distinction, placing him among the select group of surgeons credited with shaping the future of global eye surgery and highlighting India’s rising leadership in the field.
The Benedetto Strampelli Medal Lecture is regarded as the pinnacle honour of the SOI, reserved for pioneering ophthalmologists whose work has advanced surgical science and transformed patient care worldwide. At the prestigious annual SOI Congress, Dr. Mehta delivered his keynote address titled, ‘Hard Cataracts and Subluxated Lenses: Escaping Difficult Situations’, presenting breakthrough techniques in handling highly complex cataract and refractive cases. The session drew widespread acclaim, celebrating his contributions to surgical innovation and his influence on the evolution of contemporary ophthalmology.
Reflecting on the honour, Dr. Cyres Mehta said, “Receiving this prestigious award from Europe’s oldest ophthalmology society feels like a tribute not only to my work, but to the tireless spirit of our medical community. My hope is that every such milestone inspires young Indian surgeons to dream boldly and to believe that excellence from our nation can illuminate the world.” The award spotlights decades of vision-restoring innovation, backed by Dr. Mehta’s skilled hands and the cutting-edge protocols developed at his state-of-the-art International Eye Centre in Colaba, Mumbai.
This milestone crowns an exceptional year of honours for Dr. Cyres. In November, he received the Subodh Agarwal Memorial Gold Medal from the Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society of India, recognising his pioneering contributions to advanced refractive surgery and intraocular lens technology. In September, he was invited to speak at the 43rd Annual Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons in Copenhagen, Denmark, the world’s largest forum for cataract and laser vision specialists, attended by more than 16,000 ophthalmologists from fifty countries. Earlier in June, he was named Leading Eye Surgeon of Maharashtra for the third consecutive year by Union Minister of State for Health, Anupriya Patel.
Widely celebrated as the International Hero of Indian Ophthalmology, Dr. Mehta has performed more than 35,000 surgeries over a distinguished 25-year career. At his cutting-edge International Eye Centre in Colaba, he has introduced transformative technologies to India, including the nation’s first Femto Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery using the CATALYS system in 2015. Today, his centre attracts patients from over twenty countries, delivering advanced treatments such as Trifocal and Extended Depth of Focus lens implantation, SMILE Robotic Refractive Surgery, Canaloplasty for glaucoma and the pioneering NanoSLT technique.
