Recent archaeological discoveries in northern Iraq have brought renewed attention to the inclusive and tolerant ethos of Zoroastrianism. Researchers have uncovered the remains of a 1,500-year-old Christian church located at the Gird-î Kazhaw site, in Iraq’s Kurdistan region, only a short distance from a Sasanian-era Zoroastrian place of worship. The findings reaffirm that followers of both faiths lived side by side in harmony during the late Sasanian period.
The site was examined by archaeologists led by Goethe University Frankfurt and Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg. Buried stone pillars, architectural remains and fragments of a large jug bearing an early Christian cross revealed that a Christian monastery and church were established here around AD 500. This discovery marked the first known Christian structure found at this location. Equally significant is the church’s proximity to a Persian fortification where Zoroastrian rituals were practiced. Scholars note that such nearness would have been unlikely in times of hostility, reinforcing historical evidence that Zoroastrian communities often coexisted peacefully with other religions, even during periods of political rivalry between the Persian and Roman worlds.
Supporting this broader narrative, parallel research from the ancient site of Dedoplis Gora in present-day Georgia points to similar religious pluralism. Here, Zoroastrian worship existed alongside Greek and local cult practices within a single palace complex, reflecting a syncretic spiritual environment influenced by Persian thought. Together, these discoveries reaffirm Zoroastrianism’s long-standing tradition of tolerance and respect for diverse beliefs. In an age often marked by religious division, these ancient sites stand as enduring reminders that coexistence and mutual reverence were once deeply rooted in the spiritual landscapes shaped by Zoroastrian values.
