The Cowasji Patell Agiary in Thane celebrated its 246th Salgreh on 19th February, 2026, with much pride and community spirit. The landmark occasion was organised by the trustees of the Thana Agiary Fund, whose meticulous planning ensured a memorable tribute to one of the region’s most historic fire temples.
Established as a Dadgah in 1780, the Agiary was consecrated as an Adarian in 1829. After serving the community for over two centuries, the original structure was demolished in 2001 due to its deteriorating condition. A new, spacious and thoughtfully designed building was constructed around the original Kebla, completed in 2014. Further renovations undertaken in the latter half of 2025 were successfully completed in time for this year’s salgreh. The restoration was executed by contractor Khushroo Sukhadia, reflecting both craftsmanship and community commitment.
The re-consecration ceremony was assisted by Er. Farzad Ravji and Er. Khushroo Kanga, alongside local Thane priests. The official inauguration was performed by Vada Dasturji Saheb Keki Ravji.
From early morning, a steady stream of Zarthostis arrived to offer prayers at the newly renovated sanctum. The highlight of the evening was a grand Salgreh Jashan led by Vada Dasturji Saheb and performed by a team of 30 mobeds – a first for the Agiary. The hall resonated with sacred chants, as the fragrance of sandalwood filled the air. The hour-long ceremony concluded with a Humbandagi.
After a rich round of chasni, the assembled Zarthostis gathered in the Agiary grounds for a cultural programme featuring melodious renditions of classic Bollywood songs by young Parsi talents. The celebrations paused briefly for announcements and felicitations. TAF Chairman, Bomi Russi Boyce honoured Vada Dasturji Saheb and several distinguished contributors, including Er. Khushroo Kanga, Er. Farzad Ravji and Er. Pervez Bajan, contractor Khushroo Sukhadia, BPP trustees Viraf Mehta and Mahrukh Noble, Dinshaw Mehta, Er. Mehernosh Dastur, Er. Darayus Karanjia and visiting mobeds from Mumbai.
Adding historical depth to the evening, Er. Pervez Bajan shared insights from a 1322 Pahlavi text by Iranian priest Merwan Kaikashru, referencing ‘Thanak’ and acknowledging Cowasji Jehangirji Patell as among the earliest Parsis to settle in Bombay and later establish an Agiary in Thane for the community. The celebrations continued with music and concluded with a sumptuous dinner curated by Chefs Benaifer and Parvez Sidhwa (Bee’s Kitchen).
