Prof. Rusi Taleyarkhan Pioneers Breakthrough In Nuclear Safety

The Parsi community has yet another reason to take pride as Prof. Rusi Taleyarkhan, an eminent nuclear engineer at Purdue University, leads a breakthrough that could redefine how radiation is monitored across critical sectors worldwide. Prof. Taleyarkhan and his research team have successfully created and validated a patent-pending, low-cost gamma radiation monitoring technology that combines scientific rigour with real-world practicality, as a pioneering breakthrough in advancing Nuclear Safety.

This new technology uses tiny, lightweight beads made from a plant-based plastic to measure radiation quickly. These small sensors can detect harmful gamma rays within seconds and work even in tough places like nuclear reactors. One special feature is that they can tell the difference between types of radiation, which many older devices cannot do easily. Instead of using expensive machines, the beads simply change slightly after exposure, helping scientists measure radiation levels fast. The material is very low-cost, making this method much cheaper and easier to use than traditional radiation detectors.

The implications of this research are wide-ranging as experts laud its potential to lower costs and improve safety in medical device sterilization, radiation-based cancer therapies, food irradiation, packaging sterilization and nuclear power reactor operations. This path-breaking work has already been recognised through support from the US Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration.
