Queen Mary School Celebrates 150th Anniversary

Mumbai’s Queen Mary School recently celebrated its milestone 150th Anniversary across a five-day celebration, attended by a large number of alumni attending from various cities. The British Missionary school for girls founded in 1875, by Harriet Butt, has recently turned co-ed.

The celebrations included a Thanksgiving Service by the preprimary and primary section alongside Principal Grace Mathias and Chief Guest Rev. Avinash Rangayye, lauding the school in his address. Two books were also released by Chief Guest Boman Irani on the second day – ‘The History of Queen Mary School’ and ‘Queen Mary School, Mumbai, Celebrating 150 Years of Excellence’. He regaled all with his inimitable humor and singing, also honouring ex-teacher and principal Rati Wadia who received a standing ovation for her long-standing service to the school. The third day comprised an ICSE Principals’ Conclave followed by an evening of entertainment while the fourth day witnessed all Queen Marians marking time with the school band on Sports Day.

The finale held at the Tata Theatre, NCPA comprised a grand show organized by the alumni with ex-student celebrities (including fashion designer and politician, Shaina Chudasama; industrialist Urvi Piramal; film-maker Sooni Taraporewala; Shobhaa De, Shabhana Azmi and Daisy Irani), felicitations and speeches. There were exhibits on display by famous artists, a fashion show by Shaina Chudasama showcasing Queen Marians of all ages, and a live play ‘Broken Images’ with Shabana Azmi. The evening ended with a gala dinner and a passionate rendition of the school song sung by all present.
