Dr. Cyres Mehta Awarded ‘International Hero of Indian Ophthalmology’

Introduces Path-breaking Advanced 4D Cataract Technology to Mumbai

Dr. Cyres Mehta, one of the world’s leading ophthalmologists, continues to elevate India’s presence on the global stage while introducing cutting-edge innovation in eye care closer home. Dr. Mehta was conferred the prestigious ‘International Hero of Indian Ophthalmology’ award by the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS), for the fifth time, on 14th March, 2026. The recognition was presented at the annual AIOS conference held in Jaipur, which saw participation from over 23,000 delegates across 20 countries.

The award is reserved for ophthalmologists who have brought international distinction to India. Dr. Mehta’s continued recognition follows his receipt of the Benedetto Strampelli Medal from the Italian Ophthalmological Society in Rome in November 2025, one of the highest global honours in the field. His consistent achievements have placed him among a select group of Indian eye surgeons receiving sustained global acclaim.

Parallel to this recognition is a significant advancement in cataract treatment in Mumbai. Dr. Mehta has introduced the Unity 4D Cataract Removal System, making his centre among the first in Maharashtra and one of the few in India to acquire this technology from the United States. This development marks a major step forward in surgical precision and patient recovery.

Cataract surgery underwent a shift in 2016 with the introduction of laser systems, which soften the cataract before removal. However, the extraction process still depended on conventional phaco machines, where the tip’s movement generated heat within the eye. The new Unity 4D system reduces this heat generation to nearly 10 percent of earlier methods. When combined with laser technology, it significantly lowers ultrasound energy within the eye, enhancing safety and comfort.

Reduced energy exposure leads to faster healing, with some patients able to resume normal activities as early as the next day. Dr. Mehta, who underwent specialised training in Denmark in October, has been at the forefront of adopting such advancements. The introduction of extended depth-of-focus implants further enhances outcomes, allowing many patients to remain largely free from spectacles post-surgery.

With only a handful of centres worldwide equipped with this advanced system, its introduction in Mumbai firmly places the city at the forefront of modern ophthalmic care. Dr. Mehta’s twin milestones of global recognition and technological advancement reflect an unwavering commitment to raising standards in patient care while strengthening India’s position on the global ophthalmology map.

Respected worldwide as a trailblazer in the field of eye-care, Dr. Mehta has performed over 35,000 surgeries across a distinguished 25-year career. From introducing India’s first Femto Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery in 2015 to pioneering several advanced procedures at his International Eye Centre in Colaba, his contributions have consistently pushed boundaries. Today, the centre attracts patients from across the world, offering state-of-the-art treatments and precision-driven care.

The recipient of more than sixty national and international honours and repeatedly acknowledged as India’s Leading Eye Surgeon, Dr. Mehta represents a rare blend of expertise, innovation and dedication. His journey continues to inspire, marking a moment of pride for both the nation and the Parsi community.
