Nuggets Of Timeless Zoroastrian Wisdom

Across more than three millennia, the Zoroastrian faith has offered humanity a spiritual vision rooted in clarity, responsibility and moral courage. The words of Prophet Zarathushtra, the divine guidance of Ahura Mazda and the reflections of revered saints within the Parsi community continue to illuminate the path of righteous living.

At the heart of the Zoroastrian message is the call to conscious choice. Zarathushtra urges humanity in the Gathas: “Hear with your ears the highest truth, consider it with clear judgment and choose the path of righteousness.”

Our Prophet repeatedly reminds us that each individual carries responsibility for the moral direction of the world: “May we be among those who make this world better.” His message emphasises that goodness is not passive belief but active conduct: “Happiness comes to those who bring happiness to others.”

The divine wisdom guiding this path comes from Ahura Mazda, our Wise Lord. Zoroastrian prayers throughout the Avesta express the human longing to live in harmony with divine truth. In the Yasna we find the aspiration: “Through Asha, the path of truth, may we draw nearer to Ahura Mazda.”

Other revered spiritual figures include Dasturji Kukadaru Saheb, one of the most respected saints known for his humility, deep devotion and for emphasising sincerity in prayer and action, saying: “Prayer has power only when the heart is pure.” Another teaching attributed to him reflects the Zoroastrian spirit of service: “Serve humanity with sincerity and Ahura Mazda will guide your path.”

Kukadaru Saheb also reminded us that true spirituality is revealed in conduct rather than ritual: “Faith is not what we say in prayer, but how we live among people.”

Our community has also been guided by great priestly scholars including Dasturji Meherji Rana, whose wisdom and diplomacy helped establish the Parsis’ respected place in India during the Mughal era. His counsel reflected the Zoroastrian emphasis on harmony and integrity: “Where truth and righteousness prevail, there the blessings of Ahura Mazda will flourish.”

Similarly, later Zoroastrian thinkers have echoed the Prophet’s message that moral strength is the true measure of leadership and civilisation. The teachings of Zarathushtra and the guidance of saints like Dasturji Kukadaru Saheb remind us that spirituality is to be expressed in everyday life through kindness, honesty, humility and responsibility.

The guiding philosophy of Zoroastrianism is captured in the timeless triad: ‘Humata (Good Thoughts) – Hukhta (Good Words) – Hvarshta (Good Deeds), as declared by Prophet Zarathushtra centuries ago. These three principles form the ethical foundation of the faith and remind believers that spirituality must be lived through everyday conduct.

When we live life based on these principles, our participation in the eternal struggle between truth and falsehood helps bring the world closer to the divine harmony of Asha. These nuggets of timeless Zoroastrian wisdom continue to guide our community and inspire all who seek a life of judiciousness, courage and righteousness. Jamshedi Navroz Mubarak!
