Within the historic premises of Mumbai’s Sir J J Hospital stands a place that reflects the true spirit of compassion and community… a sanctuary for elderly members of the Parsi, Irani and Zoroastrian community who find themselves alone, without family or financial support in their later years.
The ward traces its origins to the vision and generosity of Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy, whose legendary philanthropy laid the foundation for several institutions dedicated to public welfare. In keeping with this noble tradition, the J J Parsi Ward was established as a special space within the hospital where elderly members of the community could live with dignity, medical care and emotional support.
Over the years, this noble legacy has been sustained through the Jeejeebhoy family. Sir Rustomjee Jeejeebhoy, a distinguished descendant of this illustrious lineage, continues to extend generous financial support to the ward. JJ Charities, an institution founded through the Jeejeebhoy philanthropic legacy, also contributes towards the ward’s upkeep and smooth functioning. In addition, the Government provides assistance, making the JJ Parsi Ward a meaningful example of community philanthropy working hand in hand with public healthcare.
The ward accommodates 23 men and 22 women, many of whom are elderly bachelors and spinsters in their seventies, eighties and nineties, with no family to care for them. Most importantly, the ward is entirely free, ensuring that those who are financially unable can still spend their later years with dignity, security and compassionate care. Residents receive comprehensive medical care from the doctors, nurses and staff of Sir JJ Hospital. Their everyday needs, including nourishing meals, clothing, medicines and personal attention, are thoughtfully provided. The wards are bright and airy, filled with sunlight and fresh air, creating a peaceful and comforting environment.
To help residents remain mentally and physically active, regular visits by physiotherapists, psychologists and occupational therapists play an important role. Activities such as quizzes, painting, light games and carrom bring joy and engagement to their routine. Musical programmes and small gatherings are also organised from time to time, adding warmth and companionship.
For the past 38 years, Mrs. Arnavaz Jal Mistry, a respected and dedicated social worker, has been closely involved with the ward. Through her compassion, commitment and the support extended via the Jal Minocher Mistry Memorial Foundation, she has helped ensure that residents receive not only proper care, but also affection, dignity and a sense of belonging.
More than just a medical ward, the JJ Parsi Ward truly lives up to its name – a ‘Home Away From Home’, where elderly members of the community find comfort, companionship and the reassurance that they are never alone.
