Dear Readers,
In today’s hyper-connected world, a message pings, a video circulates, and before we know it, it has travelled faster than the speed of reason. Within our community too, WhatsApp has quietly taken on a role far greater than it deserves. For many, it has begun to resemble a source of unquestioned truth.
Let’s just pause for a bit. Just because something goes viral does not make it valid. A sensational headline, a dramatic video or a forwarded message urging immediate sharing often bypasses judgment and taps directly into impulse. We forward before we verify. We react before we reflect. And in doing so, we inadvertently allow that ‘forward’ to set us back!
Every so often, we see viral videos that end up harming the image of our community. Clips taken out of context, half-truths dressed as facts, or at times, outright falsehoods begin circulating widely. Just last week, another such video made the rounds, sparking unnecessary outrage and confusion. Many shared it instantly, without checking its authenticity or intent. In doing so, we unknowingly give power to narratives that do not represent us fairly. It is only human nature to be drawn towards alarming or negative news. It triggers emotion. It demands attention. But by spreading it via ‘forwards’, we perpetuate the very cycle that fuels fear and misinformation.
We live in times when even established national and international news platforms are not always free from influence. With vested interests shaping narratives, the responsibility to think critically rests increasingly on each of us. Much like the food we consume determines the health of our body, what we consume audio-visually shapes our mental well-being. Constant exposure to negativity breeds anxiety and distrust.
As a community known for its wisdom and clarity of thought, we must do better. Before forwarding, pause. Ask: Is this verified? More importantly, is this helpful? Is this necessary? Let us choose to be thoughtful, not reactive. Let’s not fall for every viral storm that engulfs our sensibilities along with our social media. Because in choosing discernment over impulse, we protect not just ourselves, but the dignity and strength of our community.
