Of Vacations And Veneration

Dear Readers,

Over the past several weeks, families across the community have been travelling far and wide, making the most of the summer holidays before schools and routines resume once again. Some have journeyed abroad to reconnect with loved ones, while others have explored destinations across India or enjoyed brief local getaways with friends.

Holidays are a time of relaxation, celebration and making more cherished memories. Yet, amidst sightseeing, shopping and social visits, perhaps there is one meaningful addition that we, could consciously add to our journeys wherever we go – a visit to an Agiary, Atash Behram or Dadgah.

Across India and beyond, stand several beautiful places of worship – some well-known, some quietly tucked away in old lanes, small towns and lesser-visited locales. Many of us have experienced that unique feeling of peace while entering an unfamiliar Agiary during travel… the fragrance of sandalwood, the glorious Padshah Saheb glowing from inside a quaint kebla, a priest chanting familiar prayers and the comforting sense of belonging instantly reminding us that no matter where we are, our faith travels with us.

Such visits add a layer of auspiciousness and spiritual grounding to our journeys. More importantly, they also offer encouragement and support to the priests and caretakers who dedicate their lives to preserving these sacred spaces, often quietly and without recognition. In several places, footfalls have greatly reduced over time, and many smaller Agiaries survive largely because of the devotion of a handful of individuals determined to keep the flame alive.

This thought need not remain limited to summer vacations alone. Whether travelling for work, weddings, holidays or even a brief weekend visit, taking a few moments to visit and respectfully acknowledge our places of worship is a fine way of honouring our heritage, culture and spiritual roots.

As a community known for preserving tradition while embracing modernity, perhaps this is one small yet meaningful practice we can carry forward, ensuring that wherever our journeys take us, our connection to our faith continues to remain close to our hearts!

Have a lovely weekend!
