The rich history, migration journeys and cultural legacy of the Zoroastrian community in the United Kingdom is being celebrated through a landmark exhibition at Headstone Manor and Museum in Harrow, north-west London. The exhibition marks the first major museum showcase dedicated to Zoroastrianism in the region and offers visitors a rare glimpse into one of the world’s oldest religions.
Featuring treasured family photographs, sacred heirlooms and intricately embroidered gara saris, the exhibition brings to life the remarkable story of Zoroastrian migration and identity. Originating in ancient Persia over 3,000 years ago, Zoroastrianism today has an estimated 5,000 followers in the UK, with London being home to the largest community.
The exhibition also highlights internationally renowned Zoroastrians, including legendary singer Freddie Mercury and the Tata family, founders of Tata Steel. Younger community members, Freyan Khambatta and Shazneen Munshi, in a news report by the BBC, shared how our religion often remains misunderstood despite its global contributions and historic significance.
Malcolm Deboo, President of the Zoroastrian Trust Funds of Europe, reflected on the community’s migration from Iran to Gujarat over a thousand years ago, recalling the symbolic “sugar in milk” story that represented peaceful integration while preserving cultural identity.
Curated by Shiraz Sethna, the exhibition additionally features audio recordings of first-generation immigrants recounting their journeys from India and East Africa to Britain. Sethna explained that the project aimed to preserve valuable stories and memories before they are lost with passing generations. The exhibition serves as an important initiative in preserving and documenting the historical and cultural legacy of the thriving Zoroastrian community in the United Kingdom.
