There was a time when health did not demand attention. It was built into daily living. Meals were unprocessed. Movement was natural. Sleep was respected. And doctors were consulted when necessary, not repeatedly. Today, the pattern has reversed. In cities, where life rarely slows down, GreenRoots has begun drawing attention for a different reason, not because it promises quick results, but because it answers difficult questions. At the forefront of this holistic approach is our columnist, Dr. Danesh Chinoy – Sports Physiotherapist, Psychologist and Founding Director of Integrated Health and Rehabilitation at ‘GreenRoots’ for Holistic Health and Wellness. Widely respected for his work in preventive and lifestyle-based healthcare, Dr. Chinoy has transformed countless lives through his integrated healing methods. Parsi Times speaks with him about health and the importance of addressing the mind and body as one interconnected system.
PT: You often say people don’t fall sick overnight. What do you mean by that?
Dr. Danesh: Most conditions we see today are not sudden events but long-term outcomes. Insulin resistance does not begin the day blood sugar rises. Metabolic syndrome does not start when reports turn abnormal. Chronic pain does not appear in a single moment. These are processes that develop quietly over years, shaped by daily habits. The problem is, we only respond when the body crosses a threshold. By then, we are managing disease, not preventing it.
PT: So you place a strong emphasis on preventive healthcare?
Dr. Danesh: It is central to everything we do! Preventive healthcare is not about tests alone, it’s about understanding patterns early like energy levels dropping, weight gradually increasing, irregular sleep, frequent stiffness or fatigue… these are signals. If addressed early, many conditions can be reversed or avoided altogether. But prevention requires awareness, and more importantly, timely action.
PT: There’s been a rise in metabolic issues today, insulin resistance, weight gain, cholesterol problems. How do you approach these?
Dr. Danesh: By simplifying what has been unnecessarily complicated. At the core, metabolic health is influenced by three things, food, movement and recovery. Highly processed diets, sedentary routines and poor sleep create an environment for insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction. Instead of chasing numbers, we work on correcting the system that produces those numbers. When the system improves, the reports often follow.
PT: Women’s health, especially conditions like PCOS, seems to be increasingly common. Why is that?
Dr. Danesh: We are seeing a significant rise in conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. While often approached hormonally, the metabolic and lifestyle component cannot be ignored. Irregular cycles, weight gain, fatigue, mood fluctuations – these aren’t isolated symptoms but part of a broader imbalance. At GreenRoots, we approach such conditions in an integrated manner. Nutrition, movement, stress regulation, and appropriate therapy all play a role.
The goal is not just symptom management, but restoring balance.
PT: When a patient walks in with pain, do these lifestyle aspects still matter?
Dr. Danesh: Absolutely! A person may come in with neck or back pain, but underlying factors like inflammation, poor metabolic health, or chronic stress can influence recovery. Healing is not just about correcting structure. It is about creating the right internal environment for repair. If that environment is not addressed, progress becomes limited or temporary.
PT: Your approach seems to move beyond traditional physiotherapy.
Dr. Danesh: It does, but without abandoning its foundation. We still assess movement, strength, and biomechanics in detail. That remains essential. But we also recognise that the body is influenced by behaviour, habits and internal health. That’s why GreenRoots integrates lifestyle medicine, physiotherapy, psychology, nutrition, yoga, women’s health, and therapeutic care into a single, coordinated approach. Patients are not passed from one department to another. They are guided through a unified process.
PT: What are the most common patterns you see across patients today?
Dr. Danesh: Different complaints, similar roots – Low energy, Persistent stiffness, Gradual weight gain, Poor sleep, High stress… Whether one comes with pain, metabolic concerns, or hormonal issues, these patterns often overlap. That’s why isolated solutions rarely work long term.
PT: For someone who feels “not unwell, but not well either”, what would you advise?
Dr. Danesh: That is often the most important stage. Before disease is diagnosed, there is usually a phase of imbalance.
Do not ignore it. At this stage, small yet consistent changes – like improving food quality, introducing structured movement, regulating sleep and reducing unnecessary stress – can create significant impact. Also, seeking guidance to bring clarity to the process helps.
PT: What is the main profile of people who seek treatment at GreenRoots?
Dr. Danesh: Increasingly, we get individuals who want to stay well, not just get treated. We of course cater to pain cases, metabolic conditions and rehabilitation needs, but we also see people who recognise early signs and want to address them before they become problems. That shift, from reactive to proactive, is encouraging.
PT: How do you define success in terms of health today?
Dr. Danesh: When a person understands their body better than before, when they make informed decisions about their health and when they become less dependent on repeated intervention, that’s the direction one should move in.
There is a comforting steadiness in Dr. Danesh Chinoy’s approach – no urgency or exaggeration, just clear emphasis on what works, consistently, over time. GreenRoots does not position itself as a place for quick fixes, but as a space for those willing to understand, participate, and gradually transform their health. Each consultation is structured, detailed, and tailored to the individual, allowing time to understand not just the condition, but the person behind it. Not surprisingly, people are increasingly turning to it – not just when something goes wrong, but when they decide to do things right.
