Last week attending prayers for the departed souls of a dear friend’s father and another, who recently lost her beloved husband, got me thinking regarding the futility of existence. My friend and I sat huddled, emotional in the Agiary, holding hands, reflecting on the wonderful memories we shared with our loved ones. The grief still overwhelms but the joy of moments shared lives on.
While we spoke of the good times and the treasured memories from the past, my friend turned to me and said, “This is not the end, right? There is a Heaven where we all shall meet one day, correct?” No authority on the afterlife or religion, I simply said to her, “I believe. I do believe there is something more than this.” Ever since, I’ve had a million thoughts… Maybe there’s something more to this life. There must be something beyond death. How futile, how meaningless our existence if there is no validation for the time we walk this earth. If there are no cause-and-effect results, if there is no soul, if Karma doesn’t exist, if consequences do not matter, how bereft of meaning and substance this life of ours would be! We all want a Heaven where we get to meet all our departed loved ones, to stand in front of our creator who may praise or chastise us for all our deeds.
Death, we all know, is inevitable. It’s perhaps the one other thing besides change, that is a constant. No matter how good you treat yourself – eating healthily, following a fitness regime, trying your best to lead a stress-free life, the Grim Reaper will come knocking at some point. No one can escape. None of us are immortal. Our bodies die, our souls transcend, or we merge our consciousness with universal energy. I don’t know! But, I sure as hell want to! So, does heaven and hell exist?
Since the beginning of time, all humanity has been curiously concerned with the question of, “What will happen to me after I breathe my last?” Having reflected much on this subject and explored various perspectives, including theories proposed by scientifically inclined non-believers of heaven and the afterlife, I present several fascinating theories that attempt to explain what may happen after death…
The Simulation Theory: This hypothesis suggests that our universe may be an artificial simulation, with human beings merely acting as players in a highly advanced programmed reality. According to this idea, an evolved civilization could possess the ability to create conscious simulated worlds. While this concept does not personally resonate with me and is one I may otherwise have overlooked, I felt it important to include it for the sake of presenting varied perspectives. Perhaps, at the very least, it may encourage readers to reflect and explore their own beliefs about existence.
The Restart Theory: Here your death is simply followed by your birth. Your end is your beginning. We are just trapped in an endless loop, unaware of this unbreakable cycle, forever repeating the different stages of life. If this is true it makes me question here, “Can we then choose or have a different life each time?” Or are we just doomed to repeat our mistakes and relive our worst moments, over and over, till the end of time? Doesn’t really sit well, does it?
The Sleep Paralysis Theory: A harmless state in which after death, consciousness continues to exist even though the physical body no longer functions. In this state, one remains aware but unable to communicate, move, feel, or experience life through the senses. It describes an endless condition of conscious existence without physical form, joy, or peace, making it a deeply unsettling interpretation of the afterlife.
The Dream Theory: This proposes that life itself may simply be a dream, and death is merely the moment we awaken into another reality or existence. Just as we wake from vivid dreams, each death could mark the beginning of a completely new life, repeating endlessly. Another theory, linked to solipsism, suggests that you may be the only true consciousness in the universe, while everyone and everything else exists only within your imagination. According to this belief, nothing exists beyond your mind. Therefore, when your consciousness ends, the entire reality you created and experienced may also cease to exist forever.
Quantum Immortality: This is a scientific based theory that suggests that there are many parallel, non-interacting worlds. According to this theory, every possible outcome of quantum measurements is physically realized in a ‘different world’. In simpler words, history isn’t a single line but a tree of possibilities. Whenever the tree branches, new worlds are created, and in each world, a different outcome occurs. Those separate worlds are not aware of each other. In the many worlds’ interpretation of this theory, whenever a quantum event has a possible outcome of your demise, there’s always another world in which you exist. And you live in that world as though that is your only reality and existence. Thus, you never perish really. In one world or the other, you always are alive and that’s your reality.
Countless theories attempt to explain death and what may lie beyond it, yet the mystery continues to remain just beyond human comprehension. Across centuries, saints, philosophers, seers and dreamers have all searched for answers, though the boundary between certainty and speculation has always remained indistinct. Perhaps the truth exists somewhere between faith, consciousness and the unknown. Until humanity finds clarity, we can only hold onto our beliefs, cherish the lives we are given and seek meaning in our experiences!
