Dear Readers,
It’s been distressing to witness thousands of young Indians take to the streets because they no longer trust the very system that was meant to shape their future. The ongoing ‘Cockroach Movement’ is about so much more than student protests or an unconventional name – it’s a mirror held up to the nation, reflecting a question that should concern every parent, teacher and policymaker alike – a cry of help from a generation asking whether effort, integrity and academic excellence still hold value in a system they increasingly perceive as unfair.
Exam paper leaks affecting millions of students, persistent concerns over transparency, rising graduate unemployment and an increasing number of youth taking their own lives have created a crisis of confidence. Education has always been India’s greatest equaliser. Education is the covenant between a nation and its youth: study hard, play fair and opportunity will follow. When that covenant is broken, the loss extends way beyond classrooms.
As Parsis, this issue strikes a particularly familiar chord. Our community has always believed education is the one inheritance no one can take away. Generations of Parsi parents have willingly sacrificed comforts to ensure their children received the finest education possible. We celebrate academic achievement because we know it opens doors, builds character and strengthens society. That’s why every student, irrespective of background, deserves an examination system that is transparent, credible and beyond reproach. Merit must remain sacred. Honest students should never carry the burden of someone else’s corruption.
At the same time, every protest must remain peaceful, and every response to peaceful dissent must place the safety and dignity of young people above all else. Students are not enemies – they are the future architects of our nation, tomorrow’s doctors, engineers, teachers, entrepreneurs and leaders. Their voices deserve to be heard with respect, even if opinions differ.
If India can restore its youth’s faith in the integrity of its education system, we will have not just resolved crisis of trust, but renewed a sacred promise that merit will triumph over manipulation and hard work over privilege. For when a nation protects the hopes of its students, it safeguards the promise of its own future.
