For generations of Mumbaikars, a visit to K. Rustom & Co., near Churchgate Station, has been synonymous with nostalgic wafer-ice-cream sandwiches and cherished memories. However, the city’s 73-year-old culinary landmark has found itself at the centre of controversy after the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suspended its licence over serious hygiene and food safety violations, on 8^th July, 2026.

The action followed a surprise inspection conducted under the FDA’s ‘Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra’ campaign. Inspectors reportedly discovered live rats and houseflies inside the premises, expired artificial flavouring agents and food products, poor sanitation, and lapses in maintaining the mandatory cold chain required for safe storage of ice cream. Officials immediately suspended the establishment’s licence under the Food Safety and Standards Act and directed it to remain closed until laboratory reports are received and all deficiencies are rectified.

Authorities also revealed that an earlier laboratory report had found the parlour’s ice cream contained 7.94 per cent milk fat, below the minimum 10 per cent standard prescribed under Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) norms. Fresh food samples collected during the inspection have been sent for laboratory analysis, the results of which will determine the next course of action.

Founded in 1953, K. Rustom & Co. has long enjoyed an iconic status among Mumbai’s eateries and has earned international recognition for its signature ice cream sandwiches. Its sudden closure has disappointed loyal patrons while also highlighting the importance of maintaining uncompromising hygiene standards, regardless of an establishment’s legacy or popularity.
