Our Greatest Sporting Triumphs Are Yet To Come!

Dear Readers,

There’s something unmistakably Parsi about the pursuit of excellence. Be it business, philanthropy, the arts or sport, our community has always punched far above its weight, through discipline, determination and an unwavering commitment to giving our best. That spirit has produced sporting icons whose achievements have inspired generations, and today, it is heartening to see that legacy continuing with renewed energy.

From the legendary batting of Polly Umrigar and the flamboyant brilliance of Farokh Engineer to the pioneering leadership of Nari Contractor as also Diana Edulji in women’s cricket, our sporting history has been defined by individuals whose achievements far exceeded the size of our community. Today, that legacy continues through Olympian Adille Sumariwalla, now Vice-President of World Athletics, international racing driver Jehan Daruvala, Squash mentor – Cyrus Poncha and a whole new generation of athletes writing their own remarkable stories.

This week, we celebrate Pearl and Naomi Amalsadiwala, the talented sisters who will represent India at the Pickleball World Cup in Vietnam. Their journey continues a proud family tradition, following their father, Nozer Amalsadiwala, who captained India at the Pickleball World Cup just two years ago. Their success joins a growing list of Parsis making an impact on the global sporting stage, reminding us that our competitive spirit remains very much alive.

Equally encouraging is what’s happening closer to home. Across our baugs and community institutions, sporting activities are flourishing. Cricket, pickleball, football, badminton, tennis and indoor competitions are drawing enthusiastic participation from children, parents and grandparents alike. Our own community leagues have become occasions where competition blends seamlessly with camaraderie, friendships and laughter. Parsi Times is proud to have been the media partner of choice for many of these tournaments, witnessing first-hand how sport is bringing our community together in fresh and meaningful ways.

In a recent interview, Adille Sumariwalla observed that sustained sporting excellence is built on strong bench strength, not isolated brilliance. There’s an important lesson here for our community. The future of Parsi sport will not be written by chance, but by the opportunities we create today for more youngsters to play, compete and grow. Every tournament organised, every child encouraged, every volunteer who gives their time and every parent cheering from the sidelines strengthens that bench.

The measure of a sporting community is not how many champions it has produced, but how many dreams it continues to nurture. If we invest in our young athletes with the same foresight that built our community’s enduring legacy, we have much reason to believe that our greatest sporting triumphs are yet to come!

Have a good weekend!
