Shayan Bisney’s Constitutional Tribute Highlights Parsi Legacy

A significant contribution from our community has found its place in the prestigious legal volume, ‘India’s Constitutional Odyssey: 75 Years of Evolution and Global Reach’, with Hyderabad-based advocate Shayan J. Bisney authoring a thought-provoking chapter titled, ‘Contribution of the Parsi Community in Framing and Defending the Constitution of India’.

The commemorative publication brings together essays by eminent judges, jurists and legal scholars from around the world to mark the 75th anniversary of the Constitution of India. It features a foreword by Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant and an introduction by Hon’ble Justice Vikram Nath of the Supreme Court of India. Shayan’s contribution was invited by Editor-in-Chief Siddharth Sijoria and published by Mohan Law House.

In his extensively researched chapter, Shayan traces the remarkable contribution of the Parsi community to India’s constitutional journey. Beginning with the legendary “sugar in milk” story symbolising the Parsis’ harmonious integration into Indian society, he highlights the pivotal roles played by stalwarts like Dadabhai Naoroji, Pherozeshah Mehta, Dinshaw Wacha, Homi Mody and Rustom K. Sidhwa in India’s constitutional evolution and freedom movement. The article further examines the enduring legacy of legendary legal luminaries including Sir Jamshedji Kanga, Nani Palkhivala, H.M. Seervai, Soli Sorabjee, Fali Nariman, Justice Rohinton Nariman and Justice J.B. Pardiwala, illustrating how generations of Parsis have safeguarded constitutional values, defended civil liberties and shaped landmark judicial precedents. The chapter concludes by expressing hope that future generations will continue this proud legacy of protecting the freedoms enshrined in the Constitution.

The article seeks to bring deserved recognition to the often understated yet profound contribution of the Parsi community in shaping, preserving and defending India’s constitutional framework. Shayan’s scholarly contribution stands as a source of immense pride for the community, reaffirming the Parsis’ enduring legacy of nation-building, public service and unwavering commitment to the rule of law.
