5 Physio Resolutions For The New Year!

-By Dr. Shivam Chopra

New Year is a time for new beginnings, a chance to turn the page and start afresh. Every year, many of us make the same promises to ourselves…. “This year I will lose weight…” “I’ll exercise every day…” “I will eat healthier…” “I will finally join that gym!” Unfortunately, many of those good intentions slowly fade away as we get caught up in the demands of everyday life.

The problem isn’t that we make resolutions. The problem is that we expect to change our entire lifestyle overnight! As a physiotherapist, I’ve learnt that our body doesn’t ask for perfection, it asks for consistency. No dramatic transformations or expensive gym memberships, just small, healthy habits that we can stick to day after day. So, this New Year, let’s try to live by 5 simple Physio Resolutions that your body will genuinely thank you for!

MOVE EVERY DAY:

You don’t have to spend an hour in the gym. A 20-minute walk after dinner, taking the stairs instead of the lift, playing with your grandchildren or even dancing to your favorite song, it all counts. Our bodies were designed to move, not remain glued to a chair for 8 hours a day. The best exercise isn’t the most expensive one or the trendiest workout on social media, it’s the one you’ll actually enjoy and continue doing.

If you use a smartwatch or a fitness tracker, challenge yourself to be a little more active each day. While 10,000 steps is a popular goal, don’t get too caught up in the number. If you’re walking 3,000 steps today, don’t worry about reaching 10,000 overnight. Aim to do a little more than yesterday. Small improvements, repeated consistently, lead to lasting results.

LISTEN TO PAIN, DO NOT FEAR IT:

Pain isn’t your enemy, it’s your body’s way of asking for attention. While not every ache is a sign of serious damage, neither should it be ignored. We’ve all been guilty of saying, “it will get better on its own,” while hoping the pain simply disappears. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t.

If pain persists for more than a few days, keeps coming back or starts affecting your work, sleep or daily activities, don’t wait until it becomes unbearable. Seek advice early. The sooner you understand the cause of your pain, the sooner you can start the right treatment. Small problems are almost always easier to manage than those we’ve ignored for months.

BUILD STRENGTH, NOT JUST STAMINA

Many people believe that a daily walk is all they need to stay healthy. Walking is a wonderful habit, and I encourage everyone to do it. But after the age of 40, we naturally begin to lose muscle mass and strength without even noticing it. That loss can make everyday activities like climbing stairs, carrying groceries or getting up from a chair feel harder over time.

The good news is that it’s never too late to start. You don’t need to become a bodybuilder or spend hours in the gym. Simple strength exercises using your body weight, resistance bands or light weights, done two or three times a week, can help keep your muscles strong and your joints healthy.

Before you copy an exercise routine from social media or the internet, make sure it’s appropriate for your age, fitness level and any existing health conditions. When in doubt, ask a physiotherapist or a qualified strength and conditioning coach. Remember, doing the right exercises is far more important than simply doing more exercises.

DON’T FORGET TO RECHARGE, GET YOUR REST!

Exercise is important, but recovery is just as important. We live in a world where being busy is often worn like a badge of honor. But your body doesn’t keep score of how busy you are, it simply asks for the rest it needs. Sleep well. Stay hydrated. Give your body time to recover.

Remember, your body doesn’t become stronger while you’re exercising. It becomes stronger while it recovers afterwards.

DON’T WAIT UNTIL YOU’RE INJURED

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is: “I’ll see a physiotherapist only if I get injured.” The truth is, physiotherapy isn’t just about treating injuries, it’s about helping you move better, stay active and prevent small problems from becoming big ones. You don’t have to wait until you’re in severe pain before seeking advice. Whether you’re starting a new exercise routine, returning to sport, recovering after surgery or simply noticing an ache that refuses to go away, getting assessed early can save you weeks, or even months of discomfort.

Sometimes all you need is reassurance that nothing serious is wrong. Sometimes a few simple exercises are enough to get you back on track. And if your condition needs further medical attention, a physiotherapist can guide you to the right specialist at the right time.

Your body whispers before it screams. Listen to it early, not after it’s forced you to stop. And most importantly, be kind to your body. It has carried you through every celebration, every challenge, every success and every setback. Don’t punish it with impossible goals. Respect it. Move it. Strengthen it. Look after it. Your future self will thank you for it.

So, this New Year, don’t aim to become a different person. Aim to become a healthier version of yourself, one small habit at a time. Because good health isn’t built by grand resolutions. It’s built by the choices you make every single day. Your body has carried you through every chapter of your life, this New Year return the favour! Sal Mubarak!
