Leading Ophthalmologist, Dr. Cyres Mehta has yet again been awarded ‘Leading Eye Surgeon of Maharashtra’, adding another significant honour to a career defined by surgical precision, innovation and sustained international recognition. The award was presented by Maharashtra’s Minister for Public Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prakash Abitkar, in the presence of Shiv Sena spokesperson, Smt. Shaina NC. The occasion was also marked by the presence of former Miss Universe – Harnaaz Sandhu.
The recognition carries particular weight because it comes from within his home state, where Dr. Mehta has spent over two decades building a practice that combines advanced technology with deeply personal patient care. It follows his earlier selection as Maharashtra’s Leading Eye Surgeon for three consecutive years, including an honour conferred in 2025 by Union Minister of State for Health, Smt. Anupriya Patel.
At his plush International Eye Centre in South Mumbai, Dr. Cyres has steadily introduced procedures and technologies that were then new to Indian ophthalmology, including the ]Femto Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery using the CATALYS system (2015). His centre now offers advanced cataract, refractive and glaucoma treatments, including trifocal and extended-depth-of-focus lens implantation, SMILE robotic refractive surgery, canaloplasty and NanoSLT. This year, he introduced the Unity 4D cataract-removal system to Mumbai, designed to reduce heat and ultrasound energy inside the eye and support faster recovery.
The scale of his clinical work is striking. Over a career spanning approximately 25 years, Dr. Cyres has performed over 35,000 surgeries. His Colaba centre draws patients from over twenty countries, while his teaching and surgical demonstrations have taken him to major ophthalmic forums across Europe, the United States, Russia and the Middle East.
Recent honours reflect the breadth of that influence. In November 2025, the Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society of India presented him with the Subodh Agarwal Memorial Gold Medal for his contribution to refractive surgery and intraocular lens technology. That same month, in Rome, he became the first Indian in 25 years to receive the Benedetto Strampelli Medal Lecture from the 150-year-old Società Oftalmologica Italiana, regarded as the Society’s highest distinction.
Earlier, at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons Congress in Copenhagen, he was the only eye surgeon from Mumbai invited to speak. His instructional session on complicated cataract surgery drew a capacity audience at a gathering attended by more than 16,000 ophthalmologists from fifty countries. In March 2026, the All India Ophthalmological Society conferred upon him the “International Hero of Indian Ophthalmology” honour for the fifth time.
His exemplary career has extended beyond operating theatres and international podiums. As a consultant to the Maharashtra Police since 2003, Dr. Mehta has conducted free cataract and glaucoma surgeries for police personnel through recurring service initiatives. He has also contributed extensively to professional education as an editor, author and lecturer, with work spanning international textbooks, journals and more than a thousand presentations worldwide.
This latest honour is therefore more than another award on an already crowded shelf! It recognises a surgeon whose career has remained rooted in the same demanding purpose – to refine technique, embrace better technology, teach generously and restore sight with skill and care. For our Parsi community, it is yet another proud chapter in a journey that continues to carry Indian ophthalmology onto the world stage.
