If Your Blood Tests Are Normal… Why Are You Still Exhausted?

Do you wake up tired even after what should have been a good night’s sleep? Does your morning cup of choi or coffee feel less like a pleasure and more like a necessity? By lunchtime, are you already running out of energy? And by evening, are you too exhausted to enjoy time with your family or friends? If you’re nodding along, you’re certainly not alone. One of the most common complaints I hear is, “Doc, I don’t understand. I’m constantly tired, but all my blood tests are normal.”

Patients often hand me a folder full of reports, blood sugar, thyroid, haemoglobin and cholesterol, all neatly marked ‘within normal limits’. Yet they know something isn’t right. The question is: if everything is “normal,” why don’t you feel normal? The answer often lies in looking beyond whether you’re simply free of disease and asking a different question: Is your body actually functioning at its best? ‘Normal’ Doesn’t Always Mean ‘Healthy’. This often surprises people. It’s possible to have blood tests that don’t raise alarm bells and still experience fatigue, poor concentration, low motivation, disturbed sleep and unexplained weight gain. Sometimes, the clues are subtle, but they’re there.

Why Your Energy May Be Running Low

When we look a little deeper, three common patterns often emerge:

First: Your Body Clock Has Gone Off Track: Have you noticed that you struggle to wake up in the morning, rely on several cups of tea or coffee to get through the day, then suddenly feel wide awake late at night? Your body has its own internal clock that controls when you should feel alert and when you should feel sleepy. Stress, irregular sleep, long working hours and constant mental overload can gradually throw this rhythm out of balance. Instead of feeling refreshed in the morning, you feel as though your battery never fully charges.

Second: Your Cells Aren’t Producing Energy Efficiently

Every cell in your body has tiny ‘power stations’ that convert the food you eat into energy. For this process to work properly, your body needs enough iron stores, vitamin B12, folate, magnesium and several other nutrients. Interestingly, a normal haemoglobin level doesn’t always mean these nutrients are at ideal levels. If some of these are running low, your body may still function, but not particularly well. You may notice constant fatigue, brain fog, poor memory, muscle aches or reduced stamina long before a serious deficiency appears.

Third: Your Blood Sugar Is Taking You on a Rollercoaster

Many of us start the day with toast, biscuits, cereal or something quick because life is busy. These foods digest rapidly, giving us a burst of energy that doesn’t last very long. Soon afterwards comes the familiar slump, that overwhelming desire for another cup of chai, something sweet or an afternoon nap. When this cycle repeats every day, your energy levels begin to feel like a rollercoaster rather than a steady supply of fuel.

Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference

The good news is that improving your energy doesn’t always require complicated treatments. Often, the biggest improvements come from consistently doing the basics well. Start by exposing yourself to natural morning sunlight for a few minutes soon after waking. It helps reset your body’s internal clock and supports better energy during the day and better sleep at night. Aim to include a source of protein with every meal rather than relying mainly on refined carbohydrates. Protein, healthy fats and fibre help keep blood sugar stable and provide the building blocks your body needs to produce energy.

If tiredness has been ongoing despite eating reasonably well and sleeping enough, it may be worth discussing a more detailed evaluation with your healthcare provider. Looking beyond the routine tests to include iron stores (serum ferritin), vitamin B12, folate, vitamin D, magnesium, and a more comprehensive thyroid assessment can sometimes reveal why you’re not feeling your best.

Most importantly, don’t ignore persistent fatigue. Feeling exhausted day after day isn’t simply ‘part of getting older’, nor is it something you should accept as the price of a busy life.

Listen to What Your Body Is Trying to Tell You

Our bodies are remarkably good at sending early warning signs. Long before disease develops, they often whisper through symptoms like tiredness, poor sleep, brain fog, low mood or difficulty concentrating. Rather than dismissing these signs because your reports say ‘normal’, think of them as an invitation to look a little deeper. Ask questions. Look deeper. Because you deserve more than just being free of disease. You deserve to feel energetic, vibrant and able to enjoy life every day!
