Lord Karan Bilimoria CBE DL, the Indian-born entrepreneur behind Cobra Beer and an Independent Crossbench Peer in the House of Lords, has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of York in recognition of his outstanding contributions to entrepreneurship, higher education and public service.

The honour was conferred during the University’s graduation ceremony for the School for Business and Society, held at Central Hall on 16^th July, 2026. Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Charlie Jeffery presented the doctorate, while Professor Kiran Trehan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Enterprise, Partnerships and Engagement, delivered the citation before Lord Bilimoria addressed graduating students.

Lord Bilimoria’s inspiring journey began in India before he moved to Britain to pursue higher education. Armed with determination and a vision to create the finest Indian beer, he founded Cobra Beer despite facing financial hardship, student debt and repeated rejection. From personally delivering beer in a battered Citroen 2CV during a recession to building one of Britain’s best-known beer brands with a global presence, his story is a remarkable example of resilience, innovation and perseverance.

Describing his achievements, Professor Trehan praised Lord Bilimoria’s entrepreneurial courage and lifelong commitment to education, highlighting his belief that universities and businesses thrive through collaboration. She also reflected on his enduring message to young people: pursue your passion, adapt with confidence and always act with integrity.

Following the ceremony, Lord Bilimoria conducted a masterclass titled ‘From Start-Up Idea to Global Brand’ at the University of York-NatWest Accelerator, where he shared practical insights with students and aspiring entrepreneurs on leadership, branding, resilience and navigating business challenges.

Beyond business, Lord Bilimoria has played a distinguished role in British public life as Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce UK, former President of the Confederation of British Industry, former Chancellor of the University of Birmingham and founder of the UK-India Business Council. The latest honour further celebrates his enduring legacy as a global entrepreneur, education champion and inspiring role model whose remarkable journey continues to encourage future generations to dream boldly and achieve with integrity.
