In a remarkable achievement celebrating Parsi talent and Indian automotive craftsmanship, Mumbai-based Parsi restorer Marespand Dadachanji has earned international recognition, after a magnificent 1929 Mercedes-Benz 630K restored by him, won First Prize in the ‘Automobiles of Royal India’ class, at the prestigious 2026 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, held in California, USA, on 16th August, 2026.
Owned by noted collector, Yashvardhan Ruia, the historic Mercedes was originally ordered by the Maharaja of Tikari, in 1929. Its Pebble Beach triumph reportedly makes it the first Indian-owned Mercedes-Benz to secure a class victory at an international concours, marking an important milestone for India’s motoring heritage.
Held annually on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links, the Concours d’Elegance ranks among the world’s most prestigious showcases of rare and meticulously restored automobiles. For a royal Indian car restored in a Mumbai workshop to triumph on this celebrated platform places Dadachanji’s craftsmanship among the finest internationally.
Built during the late 1920s, the supercharged luxury tourer Mercedes-Benz 630K, was coveted by royalty and wealthy connoisseurs for its power, engineering and coachbuilt elegance. Restoring such an automobile requires painstaking mechanical expertise combined with sensitivity towards its history, originality and period craftsmanship.
The achievement drew warm appreciation from automotive circles. Noted journalist Adil Jal Darukhanawala praised the car as being, “sensitively restored by Marespand Dadachanji,” while enthusiast Rayomand J. Patell celebrated the team for making everyone proud.
For a community that has long cherished fine automobiles, with Parsis famously owning and preserving some spectacular vintage cars and motorcycles, this victory feels especially fitting. Marespand Dadachanji has taken that enduring Parsi passion for motoring and craftsmanship from a Mumbai workshop straight to the winner’s podium at Pebble Beach. A truly vintage Parsi triumph!
