Of Teachers, Life And Lessons

Dear Readers,

It’s Teachers’ Day today – a day when we celebrate a profession whose true impact can never be measured by marksheets, degrees or report cards. Teachers do something much bigger than that – they shape minds and destinies, nurture confidence, recognise potential before a child or the parent notices it, and sometimes, they alter the entire direction of a young life with a few carefully chosen words. Many of us still remember that one teacher whose encouraging words stay with us even today.

For a community that prioritizes education, our debt to teachers runs particularly deep. So many of our community’s top achievers and stalwarts have credited their teachers for their successes… for bringing out their best, encouraging curiosity and empowering them to think beyond.

But there’s another teacher whose classroom none of us can escape. Life has no timetable and gives no warning before its hardest lessons. It teaches us through love, friendship, achievement and those stretches when everything seems right. But its deepest lessons come through experiences we would never choose. Loss shows us what truly mattered. Disappointment changes our perspective. Difficult times reveal strengths we never knew we possessed. Perhaps the hardest lesson is how quickly life can change. One ordinary day can create a ‘before’ and an ‘after’. What felt secure can disappear, leaving us to gather the pieces and somehow begin again.

Today, many Zoroastrian families in South Gujarat are living through such a lesson. The floods have devastated Zoroastrian farming families, destroying crops and livelihoods, damaging homes and essential infrastructure, and leaving some villages difficult to access even weeks later. Amid this hardship, WZO Trusts’ volunteers have been reaching affected families, assessing losses first-hand and helping them rebuild (Pg. 9). Their effort and appeal deserves our wholehearted support.

So, this Teachers’ Day, as we bow in gratitude to the wonderful teachers who shape our minds and our futures, let us also remain worthy students of Life. Let us learn from its joys, grow through its sorrows and, above all, never lose our instinct to care for each other. And perhaps, that’s the lesson worth carrying through life – when fortune smiles, be grateful; when adversity strikes, be strong; and when another is hurting, let compassion move us from concern to action.

Happy Teacher’s Day! Have a good weekend!
