The Salgreh of the revered Navsari Pak Atash Behram was commemorated on 30th September, 2026, with devotion, fellowship and a grand community Gambhar, which was attended by over 2,200 community members. The gathering was graciously sponsored by distinguished community stalwart and businessman, Nozer Soli Meherji, whose sense of community service has supported numerous Zoroastrian causes, over several decades.
The annual Jashan ceremony was conducted in the compound of Navsari’s Dosibai Kotwal Parsi Orphanage, at 5:00pm. presided over by Vada Dasturji Keki Ravji, alongside Mobed Er. Freddy Palia, Firdous Karanjia, in the presence of personalities including Dinyar Minocharhomji and Kaizad Kotwal. The celebrations united Parsis from Navsari, Mumbai and other Parsi settlements including Nargol, Surat, Chikhli, Billimora and Vyara, reaffirming the spiritual significance of the Atash Behram and strengthening bonds across the community, made possible through the munificent gesture of Nozer Meherji, bringing together community members in prayer, fellowship and the tradition.
The Jashan was followed by a gala Gambhar dinner attended by community members across generations, which started by 7:00pm and extended late into the evening. The dinner was catered by Soonu Kasad, known for her delicious and authentic Parsi cuisine.
Honouring One of the World’s Oldest Zoroastrian Sacred Flames
Consecrated in 1765, the sacred flame of the Navsari Atash Behram represents an extraordinary spiritual inheritance, revered by generations of Zoroastrians. The serenity of its precinct, particularly in the early morning hours, together with the fragrance of sandalwood and the sanctity surrounding the sacred flame, creates a profound sense of reverence. The Salgreh marked far more than the anniversary of a historic place of worship. It celebrated faith, shared heritage and collective memory, while reminding the community of its responsibility to preserve its treasured religious institutions, traditions and values for future generations.
A Tribute Rooted in Service
For Nozer Meherji, sponsoring the 2026 Jashan and Gambhar carried a deep personal significance, honouring the memory of his mother, who hailed from our Dharam-Ni-Tekri – Navsari, transforming a cherished family connection into meaningful service to the wider community. For the second consecutive year, he supported the annual Navsari Gambhar, reflecting the belief that traditions remain alive when people gather to practise and celebrate them together. His association with community Gambhars also extends over 16 years, through his annual aid of gatherings at Allbless Baug and Cama Baug in Mumbai.
Nozer Meherji has long supported Zoroastrian welfare and community initiatives. His recent appointment as President of the World Zoroastrian Organisation India, marked another chapter in this continuing commitment. What distinguishes Meherji’s philanthropy is the purpose behind it – his contributions extend beyond sponsorship, nurturing spaces where faith, friendship and fellowship flourish, while helping ensure that cherished traditions remained vibrant, shared experiences for generations to come.
“The traditional Gambhar has long played a cherished role in Parsi Zoroastrian life, bringing together generations through fellowship and shared meals. Such gatherings reconnect old friends, introduce younger Parsis to their heritage and renew ties with ancestral towns like Navsari. For a community increasingly dispersed across cities, occasions like the Navsari Salgreh help bridge distances and revive relationships. They also encourage conversations around welfare, professional opportunities, charitable initiatives and community concerns,” shared Nozer Meherji.
Navsari: A Bridge Across The Community
The Salgreh beautifully reflected the bond between Navsari’s resident Parsis and the wider Zoroastrian community across India. While locals welcomed relatives, friends and fellow devotees, visitors from Mumbai and other centres returned to a city deeply rooted in Parsi history and memory. Some came to pray, others to reconnect with loved ones, while many participated in the Jashan and Gambhar. Together, their presence reaffirmed Navsari’s place within the spiritual inheritance of Zoroastrians across India. Through his sponsorship, Nozer Soli Meherji helped strengthen this valuable connection, bringing together the local and wider community through shared faith, fellowship and heritage.
Salgreh Boosts Navsari’s Local Economy
Beyond its religious and communal significance, the Salgreh also generated welcome activity across Navsari. Visitors travelling to the city contributed naturally to the local economy through transport, refreshments, shopping and visits to familiar establishments.
Autorickshaw drivers benefited from increased movement as devotees travelled between the Atash Behram, family homes, community institutions, marketplaces and the Jashan and Gambhar venue. Many visitors also made time for favourite Navsari traditions, including a stop at the popular Kolahji ice cream establishment in the bazaar.
Restaurants, vendors, shops and transport providers consequently shared in the increased footfall. This form of religious tourism is especially meaningful because it arises organically from Navsari’s spiritual and cultural importance to Zoroastrians. The Atash Behram remains foremost a sacred institution, yet the devotees it draws also engage with the wider town, demonstrating how a treasured religious landmark can contribute meaningfully to the economic life of the community surrounding it.
Historic religious institutions endure not only through preservation, but through participation. The annual Salgreh kept the Navsari Atash Behram firmly rooted in a living tradition, as devotees gathered for prayer, the Jashan and the communal Gambhar. The presence of younger Parsis was especially significant. Such occasions allowed them to experience their faith beyond books and family stories, witnessing first-hand the reverence surrounding the sacred fire, the importance of prayer and the fellowship of sharing a meal. Thus, the occasion became a meaningful bridge between generations, allowing elders to pass on traditions while younger members forged their own connection with Navsari’s sacred heritage.
Nozer Soli Meherji’s contribution reflected a philosophy of philanthropy built on consistency, humility and purpose. His longstanding support of Gambhars in Mumbai, followed by his sponsorship in Navsari, demonstrated an understanding that community welfare also means creating opportunities for people to connect. The impact of such gatherings often extends beyond the occasion itself. Friendships are renewed, conversations inspire new initiatives and younger generations discover deeper connections with their heritage.
By enabling these shared experiences, Meherji invested in something far more enduring than an event: the continuity, fellowship and spiritual fabric of the community.
Carrying Forward A Sacred Legacy
The 2026 Salgreh of the Navsari Pak Atash Behram brought prayer, memory, hospitality and community service together on one platform. It honoured an ancient sacred flame while showing how a religious celebration can produce benefits beyond the boundaries of the place of worship. It can unite a dispersed community, encourage intergenerational participation, strengthen Navsari’s identity as a destination of Zoroastrian heritage and support local livelihoods through visitor activity.
Above all, the gathering highlighted the contribution of Nozer Meherji, whose generosity and dedication helped make this important occasion possible. His service, undertaken in memory of his mother and inspired by his connection with Navsari, represents a meaningful combination of personal gratitude and collective responsibility. The Salgreh and Gambhar of the Navsari Atash Behram therefore stood as a celebration of much more than an anniversary… becoming a tribute to faith, family, heritage, service and the enduring strength of Parsi Zoroastrian unity!
