Coz Mommy Knows Best!
Dear Readers,
Many of us, yours truly including, do not get terribly excited about the gazillion ‘Days’ that every month brings forth, instituted maybe with good intentions and valid reasons, but milked dry by their commercialisation. In fact, should you google ‘List Of Important National and International Days in the year’, you will be amazed to see at least 10 ‘important’ Days allocated to each month! And most offer the opportunity to get commercialised – in terms of cards, gifts, et al.
However, there are a few of these ‘Days’ that do deserve our attention and adulation, and the Day leading that roost is surely Mother’s Day. ‘Tis true – no amount of time, attention, respect, love, gifts, etc could ever make up for the unconditional love and the immeasurable lengths that mothers will go to for their children. And before I continue, I do hope you understand the definition of being a mum is not the reserve of the womb – so this one goes out to all women who have showered their maternal love upon those very lucky kids. And as Parsis, no matter how old we are, we will always remain ‘kids’ – in keeping with how aapri 82-year-old Freny aunty will still refer to her 55-year-old son as ‘Maro Nallo’ and aapro Porus refers to his 10-year-old parrot as ‘Maro Dikro’!
So, coming back, as the world celebrates Mother’s Day on Sunday, the 13th of May this year, Parsi Times wishes every mother and every woman a Happy Mother’s Day. We idolize our mothers but we also take them for granted. We get annoyed and irritated and blame them but we love and praise them more than anyone else in our lives. We may lie and we may leave, but they always, always will love us. In the words of the French novelist and playwright, Honoré de Balzac, “The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness.”
And in addition to forgiveness, you will find words of wisdom and unmatched advice, which will hold you in good stead through all the phases that life unexpectedly springs upon you. I remember my mum always quoting a few phrases from different forms of literature to add to the value and meaning of her messages. Here’s my favourite – an excerpt from the poem, ‘If’, by the great Rudyard Kipling:
“If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise…”
Happy Mother’s Day to all our proud mommies! Have a lovely weekend, all!
